I was going through Facebook posts as I often do, when I came across a meme. ?I?d seen it before, and like that first time it ?bothered me. ?The Meme goes like this:
- Don?t like Gay marriages? Don?t get one.
- Don?t like cigarettes? ?Don?t smoke one.
- Don?t like abortions? Don?t have one.
- Don?t like sex? ?Don?t do it.
- Don?t like drugs? ?Don?t do them.
- Don?t like porn? Don?t watch it.
- Don?t like alcohol? ?Don?t drink it.
- Don?t like guns? ?Don?t buy one.
- Don?t like your rights taken away? ?Then don?t take away someone else?s.

The entire posting bothers me. ?Granted it is loaded fallacy. ?It is in fact argument of avoidance. ?I don?t want to argue the validity or invalidity of your position. ?Rather, I am going to argue from the stand point, You can live as if ?proposition A? is true, and I will live as if it were false. ?The problem with this is that it is thoroughly small-minded. ?Gay marriage if it is indeed a detriment to society, then shouldn?t one be discouraging it? ?Since cigarettes indeed lead to death, and are a big problem in the rising costs of health-care which so many can?t afford to have. ?It effects everyone. ?Abortions?if you believe abortion is murder this argument is ridiculous. ?You might as well say, ?Don?t like murder? ?Don?t murder.?
Don?t like sex. ?Many fight for sex within the marriage bed. ?This is within good reason. ?Countless studies have shown the damage that sex can have upon a relationship. ?When a couple has sex too early in the relationship, there are very powerful emotions pushing the relationship. ?This relationship is based upon the emotions emitted from the act of intercourse, rather than the reality of the current relationships. ?People may stay in relationships too long or get married when they probably wouldn?t otherwise. ?The downfall of the family unit is a problem for any society. ?The family unit is where the most basic knowledges for governance and a well-run society is established. ?Without it a society will fall into chaos. ?The stronger the family unit, the stronger will be its contribution to society. ?This is why people combat sex outside of marriage.
Furthermore, what sex are you talking about? ?Are you trying to justify 40 year olds sleeping with 14 year olds or even 12 year olds? ?If you don?t like that type of sex, then don?t do it right? ?A 14 year old or a 12 year old have enough awareness and understanding to consent to such a situation. ?What about someone who knowingly has a life-threatening STD and doesn?t alert their partner of the situation. ?Should there be nothing to protect from a situation such as this?
Don?t like drugs? ?Don?t do them. ?Which drugs do you speak of? ?Some drugs are highly dangerous and incredibly detrimental to society. ?Even the beloved ?Marijuana? that everyone is fighting for has on multiple occasions been proven to cause a decrease in IQ. ?This too leads to a diminished pay for these people and success in life. ?Therefore, their diminished status leads to a diminished contribution to society. ?Don?t like porn? ?Don?t watch it. ?Porn damages relationships. ?This has been well researched and found to be true. ?I?ve already talked about the importance of the family unit. ??Don?t like alcohol? ?Don?t drink it. ?Under what context are we speaking? ?Are we talking about issues of age? ?People who drink at too young of an age can do serious damage to their brain. ?The reason that the drinking age is at age 21 is because the frontal lobe of the brain has not fully developed. ?This is important in critical thinking skills. ?Drinking can cause damage to this part of the brain, and this too creates a drain on society. ?Do I even have to argue as to why drinking and driving is illegal?
Don?t like guns? ?Don?t buy one. ?Now, to play devils advocate here. ?I am all for the right to bear arms. ?However, putting myself into the shoes of another. ?You look at the shooting at the elementary school in Connecticut. ?Can you honestly tell me that ?Don?t like guns? Don?t buy one.? works? ?It doesn?t matter whether or not I like the guns. ?I can still get shot by them it is held by another. ?What is your next argument? ?Don?t like getting shot? ?Become a kryptonian and become bullet proof, or realize you are in the Matrix and learn how to stop bullets. ?Everyone of these arguments convey the lack of ability converse with real issues for many.
It is a clear cut argument like this for only the simpleton. ?Yes, I made very harsh comment towards anyone who actually buys into these arguments. ?The final argument of the posting will be saved for another day. ?Say or believe what you will about each of these issues and all of the nuances that go with them. ?However, I promise you that these are not arguments to be used. ?They are insanely shallow and ignorant of the gravity of each of these issues.
You want to fight for gay marriage? ?Come with arguments for it, explain why our society is better off with gay marriage legal and widely accepted. ?Same thing vice versa for those opposing gay marriage. ?This holds true for all of these discussions. ?Furthermore when we are talking about sex, drugs, porn, alcohol, or guns, there are a lot of side issues as I?ve?enumerated?above. ?There are real reasons to reject certain drugs, sex in certain situations, alcohol in certain situations that almost no one would argue against. ?Come up with better arguments ladies and gentlemen. ?Give detail to your arguments. ?This would do more for your cause than shallow, bullying rhetoric.
