All,
?
I just installed the new 120Hz Acer HN274H BMIIID 3D 27-Inch LED Monitor. ?While I'm under no illusion that it will make me a better gamer or give me a meaningful edge in BF3, I thought I would share my first impressions (I've played BF3 for about 2 hours with it).
?
1. Crisp and sharp visuals in game. ?I thought my old main display, a 27" Planar, was a decent monitor for the cost. ?It was a gift, so with a little tweaking I was able to get what I though was a pretty good display and I was pleased with how it performed. ?I was stunned at how crisp and clear the visuals are in game with this new monitor. ?The best analogy of the difference I can make is like looking through the viewer on the T-90's main gun, then hitting "C" for a 3rd person view. ?The difference in visuals between the two monitors is that stunning... I'm not kidding.
?
2. Smoother, more lifelike/fluid motion in game. ?If you're used to viewing 60Hz monitors (like 99% of us), it is hard to explain what this difference is like. ?All I can say is that there is a significant and meaningful difference in how motion is perceived at 60Hz and how it is perceived at higher framerates (at least by me). ?With my system and current BF3 settings, my average FPS is easily 100FPS and is often higher. ?I have to say that in game visuals appear far more real and lifelike and the difference is more than just slight... it grabs your attention immediately and holds it. ?I won't say it's "breathtaking", but damn, it sure makes a significant difference. ?Many folks who snipe claim that hitboxes are rendered with far greater fidelity on a 120Hz display. ?I can't back that up (yet), but the little experience I have makes me feel like I am hitting better.
?
Some things to consider...
?
Since this monitor is optimized out of the box for viewing 3D content, I had to do some quick tweaking to optimize it for gaming. ?Here are the highlights:
?
- I had to use the "dual-link" DVI cable that came with the monitor. ?I guess the DVI cable I was using wasn't dual-link, and when I tried to ?set the monitor to 120Hz mode (default is 60Hz) in Windows, I got a back screen with a dialog box from the monitor telling to use the included dual-link cable.
?
- I had to reduce the monitor's brightness from 100% (default) to about 40% (still tweaking this). ?Again, out of the box, this monitor is optimized for viewing 3D content through 3D glasses, so the 2D display is massively bright to compensate for the shading of the 3D glasses. ?If you care about your retinas, the first thing you will do is get the brightness under control. ?I left the contrast setting at its default 50% and it looks good to me.
?
- Gamma. and Contrast ?The Nvidia Control Panel's default gamma settings were far too high, which has the effect of washing things out... especially in the shadows. ?I went to Lagom's page?and used the Nvidia Control Panel to bring the gamma setting to an acceptable level. ?The default contrast setting was spot-on so I left it alone.
?
- The overall display color temperature looked a little "cool" to me, which is another way of saying that there was a little too much blue in it for my tastes. ?Again, because this monitor is optimized out of the box for viewing 3D movies, most "movie" modes of monitors and movie displays in general tend to run a little on the "cool" side (why, I don't know). ?All I did to correct this was to go into "Temperature", select "User", and back off the "Blue" level by about 10%. ?This change of settings (to Blue = 90%, Red and Green = 100%) warmed up the display enough so that the color saturation looked more even.
?
- I haven't looked at any 3D content yet, so I can't really speak about it. ?My monitor has an integrated IR emitter (very cool) and it also includes a pair of Nvidia active 3D glasses. ?I suppose I will try them out at some point. ?Customer reviews are fairly positive, so I guess i would be happy with its 3D capability too.
?
As Huey said in an earlier post, tax refund season is upon us and many of you are probably considering upgrading your systems in some fashion. ?If your rig is already performing well, and you are currently running a 60Hz monitor, I invite you to consider upgrading to a 120Hz monitor. ?If you do, I doubt you will be disappointed.
?
I got this monitor as a refurb (took a chance there, I know) and saved about $200. ?I got the last one and it was just too good a deal to pass up. ?I must say I'm very happy with this display from a 2D and gaming perspective. ?I'm not endorsing this monitor in particular, and I can't say strongly enough that the right thing to do before upgrading any hardware is to do your own homework.
?
Bottom line: ?Give a 120Hz monitor a try... once you do, I doubt very seriously that you will ever go back to 60Hz gaming. ?Forget what the naysayers ?and whiners are putting out... the difference is that significant and that positive (especially if you get a good monitor and tweak it).

Fastest rate and the lowest input lag. Those two are the most important things for a monitor. A new 120hz monitor should have these features.
