NY Times says Chinese hacked paper's computers

(AP) ? Chinese hackers repeatedly penetrated The New York Times' computer systems over the past four months, stealing reporters' passwords and hunting for files on an investigation into the wealth amassed by the family of a top Chinese leader, the newspaper reported.

Security experts hired to investigate and plug the breach found that the attacks used tactics similar to ones used in previous hacking incidents traced to China, the report said. It said the hackers routed the attacks through computers at U.S. universities, installed a strain of malicious software, or malware, associated with Chinese hackers and initiated the attacks from university computers previously used to attack U.S. military contractors.

The attacks, which began in mid-September, coincided with a Times investigation into how the relatives and family of Premier Wen Jiabao built a fortune worth over $2 billion. The report, which was posted online Oct. 25, embarrassed the Communist Party leadership, coming ahead of a fraught transition to new leaders and exposing deep-seated favoritism at a time when many Chinese are upset about a wealth gap.

Over the months of cyber-incursions, the hackers eventually lifted the computer passwords of all Times employees and used them to get into the personal computers of 53 employees.

The report said none of the Times' customer data was compromised and that information about the investigation into the Wen family remained protected.

"Computer security experts found no evidence that sensitive e-mails or files from the reporting of our articles about the Wen family were accessed, downloaded or copied," the report quoted executive editor Jill Abramson as saying.

The Chinese Defense Ministry asked for questions to be submitted in writing but initially declined comment. The Times, in its report, quoted the Defense Ministry as saying that Chinese law prohibits hacking and other acts that damage Internet security and that accusing it of "cyber-attacks without solid proof is unprofessional and baseless."

China has been accused by the U.S., other foreign governments and computer security experts of mounting a widespread, aggressive cyber-spying campaign for several years, trying to steal classified information and corporate secrets and to intimidate critics. Foreign reporters and news media, including The Associated Press, have been among the targets of attacks intended to uncover the identities of sources and to stanch critical reports about the Chinese government.

"Attacks on journalists based in China are increasingly aggressive, disruptive and sophisticated," said Greg Walton, a cyber-security researcher who has tracked Chinese hacking campaigns. China's cyber-spying efforts have excelled in part because of the government's "willingness to ignore international norms relating to civil society and media organizations," he said.

The Times reported that executives became concerned just before the publication of the Wen investigation after learning that Chinese officials had warned of unspecified consequences. Soon after the Oct. 25 publication, AT&T, which monitors the Times' computer networks, notified the company about activity consistent with a hacking attack, the report said.

After months of investigation by the computer security firm Mandiant, experts are still unsure how the hackers initially infiltrated the Times' computer systems.

Kurdish militants dismiss Turkey withdrawal reports

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The Kurdish militant PKK group said on Thursday media reports that its fighters had agreed to withdraw from Turkey as part of a peace pact to end their 28-year-old insurgency were lies and part of a psychological war.

The Sabah newspaper on Thursday said Kurdistan Workers' Party guerrillas had agreed to withdraw to northern Iraq, where the group is based, by March 21 as part of peace talks with the PKK's jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan started late last year.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has staked much political capital on the talks, given the potential for a nationalist backlash ahead of elections next year.

Media reports in recent days of a planned pullout have fuelled optimism about progress towards an end to the conflict which has killed some 40,000 people.

The PKK statement denied those reports as well as others in Turkish media that said Ankara was in talks with the militants in northern Iraq.

"The stories on this subject are also completely invented lies," the statement said. "These stories are activities in a deliberate psychological war aimed at manipulation."

Sabah, which is close to the government, said the PKK pullout would begin at the start of March when the weather in southeast Turkey turns milder. It said Ocalan, imprisoned on Imrali island south of Istanbul, was expected to issue a call within 10 days for the militants to declare a ceasefire after Kurdish politicians visit him.

Sabah did not name its source. Only a few officials are involved in the talks and have not disclosed details publicly, with the government wary of endangering its support ahead of local and presidential elections in 2014.

The PKK said it fully supported Ocalan representing the group in negotiations and called for him to be allowed to hold talks with the rest of the rebel leadership. He has been held in near isolation since he was captured in 1999.

"Talks between the leader Apo (Ocalan), our leadership and elements in the KCK (rebel umbrella group) must be facilitated for the process to advance properly in a way that will achieve results," it added.

ERDOGAN AIMS TO STRIKE BALANCE

The rebels took up arms in 1984 with the aim of creating a Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey. Declared a terrorist group by Ankara, the United States and the European Union, the PKK has since moderated its goal to one of autonomy.

In return for the withdrawal of the militants and their ultimate disarmament, the government is expected to boost the rights of Kurds, who make up about 20 percent of Turkey's population of 76 million.

As part of those reforms, Turkey's parliament last week passed a law allowing defendants to use Kurdish in court in a move seen aimed at breaking a deadlock in the trials of hundreds accused of links to the PKK. [ID:nL6N0AU2VN]

President Abdullah Gul approved the law late on Wednesday and a court in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir officially allowed the first Kurdish testimony on Thursday. Defendants have spoken in Kurdish before but on those occasions the court switched off their microphones.

The PKK are likely to be wary about pulling out of Turkey.

Their fighters withdrew from Turkish territory on Ocalan's orders after his 1999 capture as part of moves towards peace, but several hundred militants are estimated to have been killed by security forces during the withdrawal.

Erdogan gave his word this month that the same thing would not happen again.

The prime minister sought on Thursday to strike a middle ground between supporting the peace process while maintaining a hardline against the militants.

"We will not give the slightest ground in the struggle against terrorism," he said in a speech to provincial governors.

"We will also not give ground on democratization, investments and the law, as we continue to solve this problem together with our people," he said.

REPORT: AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS 2013: Burkina Faso psyche up to win against Zambia for quarter final place in Africa Cup of Nations

Burkina Faso coach Paul Put is urging his players to seize the moment and secure qualification for the last eight of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. The west Africans take on defending champions Zambia on Tuesday evening in Nelspruit knowing that a draw will be enough to take them into the knockout stages for the first time since 1998. Back then, under the Frenchman Philippe Troussier, they finished fourth. The 2013 vintage is led by another European.

Exxon Mobil reports 4Q results Friday

NEW YORK (AP) -- Exxon Mobil Corp. reports fourth-quarter results on Friday, and analysts expect net income will fall from a year ago, when asset sales boosted earnings. They're still looking for the oil giant to post quarterly earnings above $9 billion.

With Royal Dutch Shell reporting results on Thursday and Chevron Corp. joining Exxon on Friday, oil investors will get plenty of numbers to digest over the rest of the week.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Investors will be looking for insight into worldwide demand for oil and natural gas, and they'll want to learn more about Exxon's plans for production. The weak global economy has hurt energy demand, and Exxon's oil and gas production fell 7.5 percent in the third quarter compared with a year earlier.

WHY IT MATTERS: Exxon Mobil is the nation's biggest oil company and jockeys for the top spot in stock market value. The company prides itself on disciplined investment in new projects and fields ? too cautious to maintain solid production growth, in the minds of some analysts.

When Exxon went bold into natural gas, buying XTO Energy, it didn't pay immediate dividends. Strong production has helped keep natural gas prices low, hurting producers.

Barclays analyst Paul Y. Cheng, in explaining why he rates Exxon shares a neutral "Equal Weight," said in a note Wednesday that other big integrated oil companies are more compelling values and he's still "concerned that the XTO operation will remain a drag on the company's performance."

Exxon's shares fell 5 percent during the fourth quarter. Through Wednesday, they were up 5 percent so far in 2013, closing at $90.67, near the top of their 52-week range of $77.13 in June to $93.67 in October.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect Exxon will report about $9.1 billion in net income on revenue of $115.22 billion. They expect adjusted profit will work out to $1.99 per share.

YEAR-AGO QUARTER: Irving, Texas-based Exxon Mobil reported net income of $9.4 billion on revenue of $121.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011. Earnings per share were $1.97.

TB hides in bone marrow stem cells

Scientists at the Forsyth have gained new insight on how Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global epidemic. Although drugs have been available to fight TB for 50 years, the disease still infects nearly 2.2 billion people worldwide and causes 1.7 million annual deaths. This is largely attributed to the bacteria's ability to stay dormant in the human body and later resurface as active disease. The Forsyth team, and its collaborators from Stanford University, has recently discovered that Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes TB, can lay dormant and thrive within bone marrow stem cells.

The microbe Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) causes deadly disease in millions of humans and infects and persists in billions of others without causing apparent harm, yet maintaining the potential to "re-activate" and cause active tuberculosis (TB). This form of silent microbe/host interaction is known as latent or dormant TB infection. During this phase, Mtb escapes the host immune responses and survives for decades in protected niches not yet well identified. This study describes a previously unsuspected target cell used by Mtb to shield itself from the host immune system. These new findings have direct clinical implications in that they explain the reason why TB treated patients remain sensitive to TB tests for life and importantly, why TB treatment is so difficult and requires long periods of drug treatment. Moreover, these findings raise an alert for possible transmission of TB to patients undergoing bone marrow transplants with cells obtained from donors who may have latent TB.

This study, which will be published in Science Translational Medicine on January 30, 2013, was led at Forsyth by Dr. Antonio Campos-Neto, Director of Forsyth's Center for Global Infectious Diseases. The work was done in collaboration with Drs. Bikul Das and Dean Flesher from Stanford University, School of Medicine; Dr. Suely S. Kashino from Forsyth Institute, Drs. Ista Pulu and Vijay Swami, Research Institute of World's Ancient Traditions, Cultures and Heritages; Dr. Deepjyoti Kalita, KaviKrishna Foundation and Guwahati Medical College; and Dr. Hermen Yeger, the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto."Tuberculosis has remained a terrible health threat despite the proliferation of knowledge, diagnostics and treatment," said Dr. Campos-Neto. "By gaining a greater understanding of latent TB, we can potentially save hundreds of thousands of lives each year."

Summary of Study

Dr. Campos-Neto and his team conducted in vitro experiments, as well as in vivo using a well-defined animal model of latent TB, and from data collected from human patients treated for TB. From these studies they concluded that Mtb infects and persists in a dormant state for long periods of time within bone marrow (BM) stem cells. These cells constitute a unique niche or a sanctuary that provides the pathogen both immune privilege and protection from drug attack. Stem cells, like those infected by Mtb, are long living cells and possess a special machinery to exclude external molecules such as anti-TB drugs to enter their cytoplasm. Therefore, once inside these cells, Mtb benefits from this mechanism for its survival in a quiescent manner.

Elder Care Management Services and Assisted Living Placement ...

As the baby boom generation ages, more and more people are faced with the challenges of finding the proper care for older loved ones.? For seniors who need constant care, this often means looking at options for assisted living facilities.? Even if an older person is able to live at home, when loved ones do not live nearby, help is often needed.? The fields of assisted living placement services and elder care management services have expanded, and various levels of service are available for those who need help.

For aging seniors, the transition from fully independent living to the need for assisted living is sometimes gradual and sometimes sudden.? Loved ones often find themselves needing to choose an assisted living facility without having done the research necessary to find the best fit.? In other cases, loved ones may not live close by, making site visits difficult.? In this type of situation, an assisted living placement service can be very helpful.

Assisted living placement companies usually offer counseling and assessment services to determine the necessary level of care, and arrange for tours of facilities in your area.? Such companies usually collect fees from the facilities themselves, so their services are free to the consumer.

Whether a senior resides in an assisted living facility or at home, it can be difficult for loved ones to deal with medical, financial and insurance concerns, especially if they do not live nearby.? In these cases, elder care management services can provide the help needed.

One such company is Golden Years Living Solutions, based in White Plains, which provides a free service to families who are searching for senior residences (including assisted living, Alzheimer?s/dementia care and independent/55+ retirement communities).? After consulting with the family, an advisor provides information on the various senior living options available (including care level, rates, availability and promotions) based on the families? needs and desired location and budget.

Caring for an aging loved one can be challenging, and it is important to know that you don?t need to do it alone.

Adver-teasers: Super Bowl viewers get peek at ads

NEW YORK (AP) ? Super Bowl advertisers are learning the art of the tease.

Supermodel Kate Upton appears in an online Mercedes-Benz video in a low-cut top. An unknown man wakes up with his face covered in smeared lipstick and his hands bound in furry handcuffs in a Gildan Activewear clip. And "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan seemingly curses in a spot for Kraft's Mio flavored drops.

"Hey, can you say (bleep) on TV?" he asks in the spot titled "Bleep."

Super Bowl advertisers no longer are keeping spots a secret until the Big Game. They're releasing online snippets of their ads or longer video trailers that allude to the action in the Game Day spot.

It's an effort to squeeze more publicity out of advertising's biggest stage by creating pregame buzz. Advertisers are shelling out $4 million to get their 30-second spots in front of the 111 million viewers expected to tune into the game. But they're looking for ways to reach even more people: About half of the more than 30 super Bowl advertisers are expected to have teaser ads this year, up from 10 last year, according to Hulu, which aggregates Super Bowl ads on its AdZone Web site.

"It's a great way to pique people's interest," said Paul Chibe, chief marketing officer at Anheuser-Busch, which introduced snippets of one of its Super Bowl ads showing a woman in a shiny dress striding down a hallway with a beer. "If you create expectations before the game people will want to look for your ad in the telecast."

There's an art to teasers. Each spot, which can run from a few seconds to over a minute long, is intended to drive up hype by giving viewers clues about Game Day ads. But the key is to not give too much away. So marketers must walk a fine line between revealing too much ? or too little ? about their Super Bowl ads.

Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed said introducing a teaser helps people feel as if they're "in the know" about the company's Super Bowl ad before it airs. The company's teaser shows an elderly man, who is also the star of its Game Day ad, doing wheelies in a scooter on a football field.

"On game day, we want people to say, 'Shh, shh, shh. Here comes the ad,'" he says.

Some companies have been successful using Super Bowl teasers in the past. Last year, Volkswagen's teaser that showed dogs barking "The Imperial March" from the Star Wars movie was a hit. In fact, it was almost as popular as the Game Day ad, which had a Star Wars-themed twist ending. Both the teaser and the ad each received about 16 million views on YouTube.com.

But other spots fall flat, or worse, are all but been forgotten once the mystery is revealed during the Big Game. For instance, Bridgestone put out several teasers for its Super Bowl ad last year. But the Game Day ad itself did not show up the USA Today AdMeter, which ranks the popularity of ads.

"It makes sense that people would want to get more mileage out of their ads than just a single viewing on the Super Bowl because of the cost," said Barbara Lippert, columnist at mediapost.com. "But it's a big risk. It can have a big reward, too, but what usually happens is the spots just don't live up to the hype. The effect is amplified if you release it early."

To be sure, no matter how carefully marketers try to control pre-game buzz, sometimes it gets away from them. Volkswagen, following its past success with "The Imperial March," teaser, is facing some criticism this year.

On Monday, it released its Super Bowl ad showing a Minnesotan office worker who adopts a Jamaican accent because he's so happy with his car. Some online columnists called it culturally insensitive because it shows a white man adopting an accent associated with black Jamaicans.

Volkswagen said the accent is intended to convey a "relaxed cheerful demeanor."

Still, some ad experts say by releasing the ad early, Volkswagen might have spared itself backlash later. After all, now they have time to tinker with the spot before it airs.

"Even though it's not a good ad, they managed to get as much attention this year as they did last year before the game," Lippert, the ad critic, says. "It's amazing to use America as their test kitchen, which they did."

6 Surprising Facts About OCD

gty washing hands ll 130129 wblog Strep Throat May Cause OCD, and 5 Other Surprising Facts

Hand washing is a common OCD symptom. (Image credit: Digital Vision/Getty Images)

Imagine if a thought got stuck in your mind and played over and over again, eventually causing so much anxiety that you felt an overwhelming urge to repeat certain rituals or behaviors to cope with it.

That?s what it?s like for about 1 in 100 adults ? between 2 to 3 million Americans ? who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD.

The repetitive thoughts are known as compulsions and the rituals are known as obsessions. They can take over a person?s life, ruling every waking moment and stealing valuable time and energy away from vital activities.

To better understand this puzzling condition, Dr. Richard Besser, ABC New?s chief health and medical correspondent, held a tweet chat on Twitter earlier today. Mental health experts from the from the Mayo Clinic, the National Institute of Mental Health and the International OCD Foundation as well as scores of OCD therapists and sufferers, weighed in with their thoughts.

Here are five surprising facts about OCD that came out of the chat.

Fact 1: OCD starts young

For many, OCD develops early. Dr. Jeff Szymanski, executive director of the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) said there are two peaks of onset: one at puberty, between the ages of 8 and 12, and one in late adolescence, between the ages of 18 and 22. Boys are more likely to be affected at an earlier age than girls.

Chelsea Ale, who specializes in treating pediatric anxiety disorders at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., said that the onset may actually be even earlier ? at the age of four or five ? but may go unrecognized for many years.

?When people are diagnosed as adults, they usually report having had it since childhood,? she said.

Fact 2: There may be a genetic component

Although the exact cause of OCD isn?t well understood, scientists do suspect there is a strong genetic component. OCD can run in families. It?s common among first degree relatives and even identical twins. Szymanski provided this link to the first-ever study to look which of the approximately 22,000 human genes may predispose individuals to OCD.

Fact 3: There may be a link between strep throat and OCD

Kids who contract strep throat can develop PANDAS ? pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infection. One of the symptoms is OCD. For years, medical experts thought the link between a strep throat and OCD was only coincidental, but now many believe PANDAS affect the part of the brain that controls movement and behavior.

Christopher Sarampote, the chief of the prevention and treatment trials at the National Institute of Mental Health, said that the disorder has been recognized by the institute and research there is ongoing.

Fact 4: Good intentions can backfire

If a family member has OCD, you have surely asked, ?What can I do to help?? But, while the support of loved ones can be essential to recovery, family involvement can backfire if understanding and accommodations lead to enabling.

?Trying to help avoid anxiety-provoking situations makes the world smaller and smaller and keeps OCD cycle going,? Ale cautioned.

The best way to help a family member with OCD is to get educated. Szymanski offered this IOCDF resource.

Fact 5: You can conquer OCD

?Some estimates show that it takes 14-17 years between onset of OCD symptoms and getting effective treatment,? Szymanski tweeted. ?One estimate is that as many as 40 percent of individuals with?OCD?have never receive any treatment at all.?

Sarampote added, ?Delay in diagnosis may occur due to shame and feelings of distress. Many suffer in silence.?

However, OCD doesn?t have to be a lifetime sentence. There are effective therapies. Szyamanski said exposure and response prevention ? ERP ? is the gold standard for treatment. This involves gradually building up a tolerance to anxiety-producing circumstances. Research shows it can reduce symptoms by as much as 80 percent.

Ale said people who suffer from OCD may also find clinical behavioral therapy and medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)?useful.

?Seeking help for OCD was smartest decision I made.?OCD?can be defeated. I?m living proof,? one participant tweeted.

Futurity.org ? Gene marker tied to deadly breast cancer

The incorrect splicing of the KLF6 gene essentially creates a protein that causes cancer cells to spread or metastasize. Researchers say the splice variant has potential as a marker for determining which early stage breast cancer patients will have aggressive disease progression. (Credit: "3D model of DNA" via Shutterstock)

CASE WESTERN RESERVE (US) ? Discovery of a gene variant that drives the spread of breast cancer may pave the way for predicting which patients will develop more aggressive forms of the disease.

?Breast cancer is a genetically complex disease and it remains a challenge to predict disease outcomes and which patients may benefit from more aggressive treatment,? says Goutham Narla, assistant professor at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

?Our research has uncovered a promising gene marker that will not only help us better identify tumors that behave badly but provide a basis for developing and personalizing therapies to better treat our patients.?

As reported in the journal Scientific Translational Medicine, researchers discovered that a mutant gene, KLF6-SV1, was linked to the recurrence and metastasis in women with breast cancer. The incorrect splicing of the KLF6 gene essentially creates a protein that causes cancer cells to spread or metastasize.

The researchers examined the tumors of 671 breast-cancer patients in a tumor bank at Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam and found that individuals whose tumors expressed high levels of the gene variant were 50 percent more likely to die.

Since recurrence and metastasis are the major causes of death in breast cancer, this finding will provide a new direction of research to both identify women at risk and to develop targeted drugs that block the process of metastasis.

?This study presents biological proof that this splice variant can potentially be a marker for determining which early stage breast cancer patients will have disease progression,? Narla adds. ?More studies need to be done, but this could provide an important prognostic marker to determine which patients need to be treated more aggressively or watched more closely.?

Narla?s laboratory focuses on the identification and characterization of the genes and pathways involved in cancer metastasis. By studying the functional role of the KLF6 tumor suppressor gene, Narla and his team have identified new signaling pathways regulated by this gene family, providing new insight into cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The research shows that KLF6 and FOXO1, both tumor suppressor genes, are turned off as cancer spreads through the body. Since first discovering the KLF6 gene 13 years ago as a medical student at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the laboratory of Scott Friedman, Narla has been involved in the identification and characterization of the gene and its role in cancer development.

Narla will work with the breast cancer team, led by Lyndsay Harris, to further study KLF6-SV1?s potential as a prognostic marker for patients with poor outcomes. The group also will work to develop novel therapeutics that can turn the protein off and cause the cells to become less aggressive.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute supported the research.

National Association of Real Estate Editors Announces 2012 Robert ...

Denver ? January 29, 2013 ? (RealEstateRama) ? The National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) has named the winners of the Fifth Annual Robert Bruss Real Estate Book Awards. The awards recognize excellence in books published in 2011 on the broad field of real estate.

Author Kalvin Platt won the first place Gold Award in the Bruss competition for his book: ?Master-Planned Communities: Lessons from the Developments of Chuck Cobb,? published by the Urban Land Institute.

NAREE?s judges commented that Platt?s book is ?beautifully designed and illustrated? and ?well organized, clearly written and important? and serves as a ?comprehensive look back on what worked ? and what didn?t ? in early planned communities.?

Platt?s book is ?an important book evaluating the evolution of ?new towns? whose development was guided by one man, unknown to thousands who today live in a diverse range of communities he created. Author Platt overlays ?smart growth? concepts on the original plans and subsequent build-outs to see how well these communities perform today as sustainable and pleasing places to live,? commented one NAREE judge.

Charles Long took the Bruss Silver Award for his book: ?Finance for Real Estate Development,? also published by the Urban Land Institute. Long?s book is a ?terrific look at how real estate development deals work. This book is the first year of business school in your hands,? the judges commented.

Winner of the Bronze Award was Buddy Norman with Jay Papasan, for their book, ?Shift Commercial: How Commercial Brokers Tackle Tough Times,? published by Keller Williams Realty International. ?Written for commercial real estate professionals, the book is a timely how-to guide navigating through today?s prolonged economic downturn,? the NAREE jurors said.

NAREE?s First-Time Author Award winner was Adam Leitman Bailey for the book, ?Finding the Uncommon Deal,? published by Adam Leitman Bailey PC. ?The book is a good up-to-date handbook on the basics of home-buying in today?s market,? the NAREE judges commented.

NAREE esteemed panel of judges have many decades of experience as editors and NAREE leaders. Allen Norwood, freelance editor, HGTV online, retired homes editor, Charlotte Observer and former NAREE vice president, judged the Bruss Book Competition along with two NAREE past presidents: Judith Stark, freelance editor/writer and retired real estate and homes editor, St. Petersburg Times and Carl Larsen, freelance journalist and retired homes section editor, San Diego Union-Tribune.

This year?s winners demonstrate NAREE?s broad reach in real estate from urban planning to finance and commercial and residential real estate. The awards were presented June 22 at NAREE?s 46th Annual Real Estate Journalism Conference in Denver. All of the award winners received cash prizes.

NAREE?s Bruss Book Awards program is named for the late Robert Bruss, syndicated real estate columnist, prolific writer and a longtime NAREE leader. Bruss, who died in 2007, frequently wrote reviews of realty books. The Bruss Book Awards are sponsored by NAREE presidents Leigh Robinson, founder of Express Publishing, and Brad Inman, founder of Inman News, with a special gift from Art Michaels, executor of the Bruss estate.

NAREE, a non-profit association of writers celebrating 83 years of service to real estate writers, was founded in 1929.

Top Five Rules for a Healthy Dinner Plate | Fitness Republic

Healthy eating habits can go a long way in keeping you physically and mentally healthy. Ensuring that your body gets a proper nutritional supply prevents the onset and development of health complications such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, cholesterol problems and blood pressure problems. But the availability of such a vast collection of health related information on the internet and other sources can leave you feeling confused about the best eating habits to adopt. It really doesn?t have to be that difficult! There are five simple rules of a healthy dinner plate that you and your family should try to follow in order to meet the body?s nutritional requirements.

According to the American Diabetes Association, these five rules for a healthy dinner plate can effectively lower the risk of diabetes, and can also help to reduce excess body weight. The following guidelines are for a standard 9 inch dinner plate. Moreover, experts explain that you must still be able to see the rims of the dinner plate after following the five rules.

Rule # 1- Non Starchy Portion

The first rule of a healthy dinner plate is to fill ? of it up with non-starchy vegetables. Non starchy vegetables include cucumbers, lettuce, mushrooms, green beans, peppers, carrots, cauliflower, carrots, beets, and broccoli. According to experts at the American Diabetes Association, individuals should not be wary of eating lots of vegetables. Vegetables that are raw and fresh, frozen, or canned with ?low sodium? or ?no salt? labels only contain between 10 to 45 calories per cup. The dressing, butter and sauces are responsible for the added calorie count.

Rule # 2- Starchy Portion

The second rule of a healthy dinner plate is to fill ? of it up with starchy grains or vegetables. These include corn, white potatoes, peas, popcorn, pretzels, cereal, crackers, bread, pasta, rice, and tortillas. Avoid white bread, white rice and other refined grains. Stick to whole grains such as whole wheat pasta, brown rice, wild rice, or whole wheat bread. Keep in mind that products with ?multigrain?, ?9-grain? and ?wheat? labels are not made of whole grains. ?

Rule # 3- Protein Portion

The third rule of a healthy dinner plate is to fill ? of it up with protein. This could be meat, or a substitute of meat such as cheese, egg, pork, tuna, beef, chicken, fish, tofu, and turkey. Keep in mind that ? portion of meat, chicken, beef or pork should be roughly equal to the size of a deck of cards.

Rule # 4- Fruit Portion

The fourth rule of a healthy dinner plate is to include ? cup of canned, fresh, or frozen fruits. Avoid frozen fruit that contains added sugars, fruit juice, and canned fruits with heavy syrup. These sources of fruits have several additional sugars. Opt for canned fruit with labels such as ?in its own juice? or ?in lite syrup?, fresh fruit, or unsweetened frozen fruits.

Rule # 5- Milk

The last rule of a healthy dinner plate is to include an 8 oz glass of non fat or low fat milk, or a 6 oz portion of yoghurt. If you are unable to eat dairy based products, add a small carbohydrate source in place of the dairy portion such as a small roll.

Poultry producers can reduce bacterial cross-contamination in poultry cages by treating the cages with forced air that's been heated to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, according to a study by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists.

While being transported in coops on trucks, poultry that have bacteria such as Campylobacter can contaminate, through their feces, other poultry that are free of pathogens. Those disease-causing bacteria can then be passed on to the next group of birds during the next trip, and so forth, unless the cycle is broken.

Campylobacter is a food-borne pathogen that can be present in raw or undercooked poultry. Since the bacteria are commonly found in the digestive tracts of poultry, they're readily deposited onto coops and trucks when contaminated animals are transported to processing plants.

In the study, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) microbiologists Mark Berrang and Richard Meinersmann collaborated with researcher Charles Hofacre of the University of Georgia at Athens. Berrang and Meinersmann work in the ARS Bacterial Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Resistance Research Unit in Athens. ARS is USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA priority of promoting food safety.

The researchers tested the use of hot flowing air to speed the process of drying soiled or washed cages to lower or eliminate detectable Campylobacter on cage flooring.

When the hot flowing air was applied to fecally soiled transport cage flooring samples for 15 minutes after a water-spray wash treatment, Campylobacter levels declined to an undetectable level. Static heat at similar temperatures was not nearly as effective, and unheated flowing air was moderately effective, but less so than hot flowing air.

Report: Japan to air ultra-high-def TV in 2014

11 hrs.

TOKYO???The Japanese government is set to launch the world's first 4K TV broadcast in July 2014, roughly two years ahead of schedule, to help stir demand for ultra high-definition televisions, the Asahi newspaper reported on Sunday without citing sources.

The service will begin from communications satellites, followed by satellite broadcasting and ground digital broadcasting, the report said.

The 4K TVs, which boast four times the resolution of current high-definition TVs, are now on sale by Japanese makers including Sony, Panasonic and Sharp. Other manufacturers include South Korea's LG Electronics.

Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications had aimed to kick-start the 4K TV service in 2016. That has been brought forward to July 2014, when the final match of the 2014 football World Cup is set to take place in Brazil, the Asahi report said.

In Japan, the development of super high-definition 8K TVs is in progress, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications plans to launch the test 8K TV broadcast in 2016, two years ahead of schedule, it said.

MIO Alpha BLE

Heart rate, as athletes know, indicates fitness and exercise intensity better than most other metrics. Until very recently, the only reliable way to measure heart rate was to wear a chest strap, as I did while testing the Digifit iCardio Multi-Sport Heart Rate Monitor. I can say from personal experience that they're not only uncomfortable, but also require another device to read their output, and try doing that while maintaining speed and watching where you're going. A new wristwatch, the MIO Alpha BLE ($199 direct) reads heart rate through an optical sensor on its back and displays it in real time. Simple as that.

For running, cycling, and plenty of other endurance sports, the Alpha represents a huge upgrade in comfort and ease-of-use in heart rate monitors. It includes a number of useful features and settings, too, such as stopwatch functionality during which you can record your heart rate and keep track of your time spent in the zone (between the low and "up" heart rate you set for yourself). Considering the $200 price, though, the MIO Alpha BLE is somewhat expensive. Because I follow the rapidly growing field of activity trackers and other personal fitness gadgets, I wanted the Alpha to do a little more, such as measure distance traveled or steps taken, which it does not. You can get some of these stats by pairing the MIO with a compatible app, such as MapMyRun or RunKeeper, but I'd ideally like to see a pedometer-like reading right on the device itself.

Design
Much more comfortable than a chest strap, the MIO Alpha looks like a chunky sports watch, with a pliant, durable silicone band. The watch face, available in two accent colors, "shadow" (black) and "arctic" (white), displays data in large format using a negative dot matrix LCD, which makes it easy to read even in strong sunlight. On both the left and right of the watch is a single button that's flush against the watch face, for navigating the features and changing the settings.

It also comes with a USB charging station for the rechargable lithium polymer battery, which attaches magnetically to the back of the watch.

I find the device rather attractive, and especially like the row of three holes in the band, for securing with a three-pronged clasp, that travel its entire length. The MIO Alpha should be worn a little higher on the arm and more snugly than a typical watch, as it needs to be in close contact with your skin to accurately read your heart rate. Of course, when you're not taking your heart rate, you can readjust it to wherever it's most comfortable.

How it Works
The MIO Alpha BLE works by using an optical sensor, located on the back of the watch, to read the volume of blood under your skin, and therefore take your pulse. The heart rate function does not run constantly. You have to turn it on and off. Press and hold the right side button, and it will read your current heart rate, displaying it on the watch face in real time. When you?re not taking your heart rate, the MIO Alpha displays only the time.

Accuracy
In testing the MIO Alpha BLE, I took several readings of my resting heart rate just to get a sense of how the device worked and found it to always be within two beats per minute of my own reading (using the rudimentary two-fingers-to-the-neck method).

Then, I wore the watch to the gym and took a few more readings that I compared with the readings from the hand-grip sensors on some cardio equipment, which are sometimes accurate and sometimes ghastly off. I jumped on an elliptical trainer, took a few readings using the hand sensors to make sure they were at least within the range of my expectations (they were), and worked up a sweat. I turned on the Alpha MIO and started comparing. Every reading was once again within two beats per minute. Impressive.

Additional Features
The button to the left of the watch face activates additional features that make the MIO Alpha BLE a true athletic gadget. You can adjust your minimum and maximum desired heart rate (it defaults to 110 to 130 beats per minute), and while you're working out, the Alpha will beep if you're not in the desired zone. It also flashes a colored light to indicate whether you're over (red), under (blue), or within (green) the zone you set.

You can also turn on a stopwatch feature that lets you time an activity while reading your heart rate in the background, which is where the colored lights and audio cues really help, as you can hear them and see them from the corner of your eye without slowing down to focus on the precise reading.

To integrate your heart rate stats into other data from health and fitness apps, you'll need a mobile device with Bluetooth 4.0, and one of the following compatible apps: Adidas MiCoach, Endomo, MapMyRide, MapMyRun, RunKeeper, Strava, or Wahoo Fitness.

While the watch is waterproof and you can even swim while wearing it, the instructions warn against pressing the watch's buttons while underwater. You'll need to turn on the heart rate function and set up the timer before hopping into the pool.

Pricey, but Among the Best
I highly recommend the MIO Alpha BLE over a chest strap for any athlete or fitness buff looking to add heart rate to their personal data measurements. For the price, however, I do wish it had at least one or two more features for tracking activity directly, although for the time being, at least you can pair it with an app.

If in its second or third iteration the MIO Alpha can add a few key personal fitness tracking features, such steps taken and total distance traveled, it might be a five-star product. The question is whether it will get there first, as the competition is fierce?which is a good thing for consumers.
