Free Fun in Austin: Family Friendly New Year's Events 2013


If you're looking to enjoy some family time on the last day of the year, we have a full list of family friendly activities in and around town. Please note that some of these activities do have a fee, but they are sure to be a good way to ring in the New Year!

Alamo Kids Camp: My Neighbor Totoro -- Friday, December 28 - Thursday, January 3, various times, Alamo Lake Creek. When two girls move to the country to be near their ailing mother, they have adventures with the wondrous forest spirits who live nearby. Children age 3 and over will be allowed at all screenings of this show. No infants however, and families with loud children will be asked to leave. FREE. (13729 Research Blvd)

What's the Story Steve? -- Saturday, December 29, 10 a.m., ColdTowne Theater. Steve celebrates the New Year by throwing the greatest fake New Year's Eve party for kids EVER. Audience members are invited on stage to help build the "decorations," create stories about the guests at the party, and to imagine what the New Year will bring. FREE; donations appreciated. After the show kids are invited to stay for a drop in improv class from 11 - 11:50 a.m. for $10. (4803 Airport Blvd)

Happy New Year Storytime -- Monday, December 31, 11:30 a.m., BookPeople.?Please join in for some celebratory stories all about things that are new. We will read the wonderful book, A House in the Woods, plus some other new stories and start the year off right, the BookKids way! (603 N Lamar Blvd)

Austin's New Year -- Monday, December 31, 5 - 10:30 p.m., Auditorium Shores. Austin's New Year (ANY) is a free, family friendly community event celebrating Austin's diverse and talented creative community through art, films, and live music.Don't forget to stick around for the fireworks finale starting at 10 p.m! Ice Skating on the Plaza -- Daily, through January 6, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., Whole Foods Lamar Plaza.?Join us for ice skating on the Plaza at the Lamar store location. $10 per person, skate rental included. Listen to music, sip cocoa, or buy a cup of soup. (525 N Lamar Blvd)

New Year's Eve All You Can Play Packages?-- Monday, December 31, Main Event. Choose from two all you can play packages:?Family Fun Celebration, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., $16.95; Ultimate Celebration, 5 p.m. - close, $21.95.?Enjoy bowling, billiards, laser tag, and other activities where available. NOON Year's Party -- Monday, December 31, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Pump It Up Round Rock and Pump It Up Austin.?We will be doing a countdown to New Years at NOON (sharp) while having a Glow experience your children won't soon forget. This is the perfect way to celebrate with your children before going out for the evening! During the event we'll be turning off the lights and turning on the Special FX lights to truly make this a New Year's party the family won't forget! NOON Year's Eve Celebration?-- December 31, 10:30 a.m. - noon, Pinballz Arcade. Parents and kids age 12 and under are invited to celebrate New Year's Eve with arts and crafts, cupcake snacks, $5 in tokens per child, and a 12 p.m. balloon drop.?$5 entry per child, advanced registration suggested. 512-420-TILT. New Year's Eve Family Celebration?-- Monday, December 31, 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., Austin's Park. Celebrate early all day with unlimited food, fun, and attractions. Free face painting, cotton candy, and more. Kids can sing along to their favorite songs on a big screen with Kids Karaoke. Balloon drops at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. -- pop the balloons and find great prizes! First 200 children in the door receive 2013 New Year party favors.?$16.95 + tax per person.?(16231 IH-35, Pflugerville)

New Year's Eve Special & Movie Night -- Monday, December 31, Safari Champ. $5 admission all day.?Enjoy a special movie night from 6 p.m. - midnight, with games, pizza, popcorn, playing in the structures, and movie time. New Year's Eve Overnighter -- Monday, December 31, 6 p.m. - Tuesday, January 1, 10 a.m., Twin Lakes YMCA. Camp Twin Lakes and the Twin Lakes Family YMCA Teen Program are joining forces to bring kids ages 6 - 15 the most incredible overnight experience you can imagine. Kids will enjoy activities grouped by age, including laser tag, paintball, a zipline, games in the gymnasium, swimming in the indoor pool, and more. There will be a midnight dance party for kids forth grade and above, as well as video games in the Teen Zone. Cost is $45 per child for Y Members or $55 per child for Non-Members. Esquina Style New Year's Eve Celebration -- Monday, December 31, 8 p.m., Esquina Tango.
