LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese stocks opened higher Thursday, with banks helped by earnings results and a weaker yen lifting exporters, particularly in the auto space. The Nikkei Stock Average /quotes/zigman/5986735 JP:100000018 +0.82% gained 0.5% to 8,703.95, with the Topix rising 0.6%. Shares in Japan's top three banks climbed after having fallen ahead of their late Wednesday earnings reports. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. /quotes/zigman/267078 JP:8306 +2.32% /quotes/zigman/392753/quotes/nls/mtu MTU -2.07% gained 0.6%, Mizuho Financial Group Inc. /quotes/zigman/317735 JP:8411 +1.64% /quotes/zigman/1500746/quotes/nls/mfg MFG -0.98% added 0.8%, while Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. /quotes/zigman/310742 JP:8316 +3.08% /quotes/zigman/1557301/quotes/nls/smfg SMFG -0.17% -- the only of the three to report a rise in profit -- gained 2%.
