South Dakota executes man who murdered 9-year-old girl

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? A South Dakota inmate was executed Tuesday night for the 1990 rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl who disappeared after leaving her home to buy sugar at a nearby store so she could make lemonade.

Donald Moeller, 60, received a lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls, marking South Dakota's second execution this month in an unusual surge for a state that has carried out just two other death sentences since 1913.

When asked if he had any last words, Moeller replied, "No sir," and then said, "They're my fan club?"

Moeller then was administered a lethal injection at 10:01 p.m. He took about eight heavy breaths before the breathing stopped and Moeller turned slightly pink.

Moeller's eyes remained open, and his skin turned ashen, then purple. The coroner checked for vital signs, and Moeller was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m.

Moeller kidnapped Becky O'Connell from a Sioux Falls convenience store, where she'd gone to buy sugar to make lemonade at home. He drove her to a secluded area near the Big Sioux River, then raped and stabbed the girl. Her naked body was found the next day; investigators said her throat had been slashed.

Becky's mother, Tina Curl, has been steadfast in her wish to watch Moeller die, even raising funds to cover the expenses to make the 1,400-mile trip from her home in New York state to Sioux Falls for the execution.

After the execution, she showed pictures of Becky at 9 followed by a framed artist's rending of what she would have looked like at 32.

Her husband, Dave Curl, said Moeller will never hurt another child.

"We despise that so-called man," he said. "The death of Donald Moeller is not going to give us closure."

Moeller initially was convicted in 1992, but the state Supreme Court overturned it, ruling that improper evidence was used at trial. He was again convicted and sentenced to die in 1997. The state Supreme Court affirmed the sentence, and Moeller lost appeals on both the state and federal levels.

Though he fought his conviction and sentence for years, Moeller in July he said he was ready to accept death as the consequence of his actions. He admitted for the first time in court that he killed the girl.

"I killed. I deserve to be killed," he said.

But even as Moeller insisted he was ready to die, several motions were filed on his behalf to stop the execution despite his protests.

Earlier this month, a federal judge dismissed a pending suit challenging South Dakota's execution protocol after Moeller insisted he wanted no part of it. Moeller also distanced himself from a motion filed by a woman with loose family ties who argued that his decades in solitary confinement had made him incapable of voluntarily accepting his fate. That motion was dismissed Monday.

Moeller's execution comes just two weeks after the Oct. 15 execution of Eric Robert for killing South Dakota prison guard Ronald "R.J." Johnson during a failed escape attempt.

Before that, the last execution in South Dakota was in 2007, when Elijah Page died by lethal injection for the murder of Chester Allan Poage, who was abducted and killed in a scheme to burglarize his mother's home.

In 1947, George Sitts was electrocuted for killing two law enforcement officers. And in 1913, Joseph Rickman was hanged for the murder of a woman and her daughter.

They were among 17 inmates executed since 1877, the oldest of which came during the days of the Dakota Territory.

Microsoft Wedge Touch Mouse

Microsoft is clearly pushing itself to appear more innovative. This is pretty clear with Windows 8, but just as clear with Microsoft's Windows 8 peripherals, like the ultra-portable Wedge Mobile Touch Mouse. It crams all of the touch functionality of the Editors' Choice Microsoft Touch Mouse ($79.95 direct, 4.5 stars) into a tiny mouse with Bluetooth connectivity. The tiny size and extra functionality won't do much for deskbound users or systems running Windows 7, so it's tough to recommend to a broad audience.

Design and Features
The Wedge Touch Mouse is tiny, weighing 2.08 ounces (0.13 pound) and measuring 1.1 by 2.3 by 2.0 inches (HWD)?about the size of a thick stack of Post-it Notes, but with a distinctive wedge profile. As wireless mice go, it's the polar opposite of the HP Wi-Fi Touch Mouse X7000 ($59.99 direct, 3 stars), which boasted Wi-Fi connectivity, but was a whopping six ounces and too big for comfortable use.

The Wedge Mouse takes compact design to a new level, chopping off the entire back half of the traditional mouse, leaving only the right and left buttons. But these aren't your usual mouse buttons, either, as the two clickable buttons are actually part of a single clickable surface, and the entire surface also functions as a touchpad. Your first inclination may be to grab it with the tapered end facing toward you, but that's backwards. The downward slope serves as the two buttons for your mouse. With no palm rest, however, your hand will either rest on the desk or tabletop being used, or held just off the surface, which I can't imagine will do good things ergonomically.

The design isn't simply compact, it's made for portability as well. The small mouse features "Backpack Mode," which senses when the mouse has been lifted from the desk surface and inactive for a while, switching power off automatically. Microsoft's BlueTrack technology, allows the Wedge Mouse to be used on virtually any surface that doesn't have a mirror finish, meaning that you can use it nearly anywhere?on the back of a book, across the leg of your pants, on the arm of a couch. It's nearly as versatile as the Logitech Couch Mouse M515 ($49.99 direct, 4 stars).

Scrolling (both vertical and horizontal) is simple and intuitive, done by simply dragging a finger on the touch surface. Horizontal scrolling becomes all the more important in Windows 8, because the Start Screen stretches out to the sides whether in portrait or landscape orientations.

Setup and Performance
Setup is simple: Insert an AA battery and power on the mouse. Press the Bluetooth Connect button for 3-5 seconds, and then add the mouse using your Control Panel under Add a Device. Within moments, you'll be up and running.

Once you're connected, all of your usual cursor control and left- and right-clicking functions will work without any trouble. The one area you might find troublesome is scrolling, as the mouse uses its touchable surface for both vertical and horizontal movement. While vertical scrolling is pretty simple, horizontal scrolling might take some getting used to, as it means swiping your finger side to side, a move that isn't as ingrained for longtime mouse users. You'll also need to grow accustomed to scrolling without clicking, as the same finger used for clicking is the same one you'll be swiping side to side.

The Wedge Mobile Touch Mouse is easily one of the most portable and versatile mice we've reviewed?it's certainly the smallest?and the addition of four-way scrolling is indispensable for Windows 8 users that may not have a touch screen to work with. However, the super-compact design may be a bit further outside of the box than some users want to go. It's definitely the mouse to grab if you need both portability and Windows 8-friendly four-way scrolling, but for deskbound users and other operating systems, there are better, cheaper mice available. For similar four-way scrolling in a more traditional form-factor, check out the Editors' Choice Microsoft Touch Mouse, which is getting a Windows 8 upgrade.

SEO Boston MA | Search Engine Optimization | Small Business ...

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the art of getting a company higher on search engines including Google, Yahoo, and Bing. ?In Boston, MA a common misconception when we speak to potential clients is the assumption anyone who speaks with them including companies such as Yelp, Citysearch, and Yellowpages are performing this service. ?The reality of SEO is it is a fairly ambiguous term, that is bandied about by sales people without any actual substance.

A great search engine optimization company in Boston, MA will provide:

  1. Quality content on a variety of sites (Including your own website)
  2. Back end coding (including; titles, descriptions, headers etc)
  3. Social media business pages (As well as updates)
  4. Social Book Marking
  5. Video Optimization
  6. Listing Sites (Including Google + Local, Yahoo Local, and Bing Business)

?

A great way to find out the extent of knowledge of the person you are speaking with is to ask them about Panda, and Penguin. ?These two words will mean a lot to the SEO expert who is really trying to help your business succeed online. ?To the marketer of yesteryear who is simply throwing out terminology to try and get your business, they will have no clue. ?Panda and Penguin are Googles two current algorithm iterations, simply defined, they are what govern how different businesses come up to the top of Google for searches.

It is very easy to lump everything together from an advertising perspective and declare; ??I have already heard about this and I am not doing it?. ?Unfortunately, this doesn?t diminish the importance of Google, Yahoo, and Bing on your business, and will not turn the clocks back to 15 years ago before the internet influenced your company. ?As a business owner, you are worried about paying your bills, your employees, buying product, customer service, and a myriad of other issues that determine your success. ?Allow a company that is credible, who has years of experience and multiple employees to be responsible for your online image. ?When it comes to your business, can you really afford not to?

How to ensure everyone's committed to workplace safety

It?s important to engage all of your employees in workplace safety so everyone knows what their responsibilities are and what to do in an emergency.

Workplace consultation involves developing and implementing effective consultation mechanisms, which encourage cooperation, engagement of workers and management across the workplace. Discussion between management and workers on workplace health and safety (WH&S) related issues are aimed at exchanging views and considering opinions. Reaching a consensus serves to foster collaboration, involvement and cooperation.

There are significant advantages for implementing a culture of consultation in the workplace. Businesses working to best practice recognise the benefits of regularly seeking opinions and views from workers, whether that be through consultation with individuals, groups, unions, or a mixture of all three.

The WorkSafe Victoria medium segment strategy encourages medium businesses to integrate safety into their business management systems, to ensure they practice prevention rather than reaction, and gain commitment from owners/directors to the process.

Often these owners and directors often are just simply unaware that systematic prevention based health and safety management and promotion leads to reduced WorkCover premiums and other cost reductions.

However, many people feel that current models of safety management systems are far too complex for the medium segment; they want the cost reductions, but not the complexity that comes with it. This is why the ?Seven Pillars of Safety? has been developed.

The fifth pillar is ?Consultation?. Regular inclusive discussion with relevant staff on workplace health and safety and return to work improvements results in a workplace safety system, which is owned and committed to by all employees.

So how does your workplace measure up?

Area: Health and Safety Representatives (HSR?s)

What to look for:

Expected practice:

  • Designated Work Groups (DWG?s) are established through consultation
  • HSR elections held every three years or as required
  • HSR Training conducted
  • List of HSR?s displayed
  • Consultation minuted at health and safety committee (allowing for privacy considerations) and outcomes acted upon and recorded.

Unacceptable practice:

  • Employees request HSR?s but none in place
  • HSR?s appointed by management

Area: Supervisors / Managers

What to look for:

Expected practice:

  • ?No Blame? culture
  • Managers and supervisors have consultation KPI?s

Unacceptable practice:

Area: Health and Safety Committee (HSC)

What to look for:

  • Defined scope and frequency

Expected practice:

Health and safety committee:

  • Meets regularly (at least quarterly)
  • Is involved in relevant organisational activities
  • Has documented objectives
  • Have minutes displayed to all staff and reported to directors
  • Are attended by senior manager (at least direct report to owner / director)

This simplified approach is designed to support personnel in medium businesses that have OHS and RTW responsibilities on top of their normal duties. It will establish and confirm their role as the ringmasters, not the experts and as facilitators, not doers of everything.

WorkSafe have found that these people lack confidence, skills and capability, but are expected to have all the answers and are often presented with an overwhelming amount of complex information. The aim is to provide them with support that is easy to access and tailored to their needs.

At Work Safety Hub?we are using the seven pillars as a guideline. Businesses now have a much simpler view and understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

Sandy strengthens as nears U.S. coast; Wall Street shut

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy, the monster storm bearing down on the U.S. East Coast, strengthened on Monday after hundreds of thousands moved to higher ground, public transport shut down and the U.S. stock market suffered its first weather-related closure in 27 years.

About 50 million people from the Mid-Atlantic to Canada were in the path of the nearly 1,000-mile-wide (1,600-km-wide) storm, which forecasters said could be the largest to hit the mainland in U.S. history. It was expected to topple trees, damage buildings, cause power outages and trigger heavy flooding.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Monday the Category 1 storm had strengthened as it turned toward the coast and was moving at 20 miles per hour (32 km per hour). It was expected to bring a "life-threatening storm surge," coastal hurricane winds and heavy snow in the Appalachian Mountains, the NHC said.

Nine U.S. states have declared states of emergency, and with the U.S. election eight days away President Barack Obama canceled a campaign event in Florida on Monday in order to return to Washington and monitor the U.S. government's response to the storm.

"This is a serious and big storm," Obama said on Sunday after a briefing at the federal government's storm response center in Washington. "We don't yet know where it's going to hit, where we're going to see the biggest impacts.

Sandy killed 66 people in the Caribbean last week before pounding U.S. coastal areas with rain and triggering snow falls at higher elevations as it moved north.

Forecasting services indicated early Monday the center of the storm would strike the New Jersey shore near Atlantic City on Monday night. While Sandy does not pack the punch of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005, it could become more potent as it approaches the U.S. coast.

Winds were at a maximum of 85 mph, the NHC said in its 8 a.m. (1200 GMT) report, up from 75 mph six hours earlier. It said tropical storm-force winds reached as far as 485 miles from the center.

Seventeen people from the replica HMS Bounty abandoned ship while stranded at sea off North Carolina in the path of the hurricane, roughly 160 miles from the center of storm, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Monday.

"The 17-person crew donned cold water survival suits and lifejackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies," the Coast Guard said, adding it was determining which aircraft or vessel was best-placed to launch a rescue.

The three-masted tall ship was built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny on the Bounty."

New York and other cities and towns closed their transit systems and ordered mass evacuations from low-lying areas ahead of a storm surge that could reach as high as 11 feet.

All U.S. stock markets will be closed on Monday and possibly Tuesday, the operator of the New York Stock Exchange said late on Sunday, reversing an earlier plan that would have kept electronic trading going on Monday.

The United Nations, Broadway theaters, New Jersey casinos, schools up and down the Eastern Seaboard, and myriad corporate events were also being shut down.

'DON'T BE STUPID'

Officials ordered people in coastal towns and low-lying areas to evacuate, often telling them they would put emergency workers' lives at risk if they stayed.

"Don't be stupid, get out, and go to higher, safer ground," New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told a news conference.

Forecasters said Sandy was a rare, hybrid "super storm" created by an Arctic jet stream wrapping itself around a tropical storm, possibly causing up to 12 inches of rain in some areas, as well as up to 3 feet (1 meter) of snowfall in the Appalachian Mountains from West Virginia to Kentucky.

At 8 a.m. (1200 GMT), the NHC said Sandy was centered about 265 miles southeast of Atlantic City and about 310 miles south-southeast of New York City.

Worried residents in the hurricane's path packed stores, searching for generators, flashlights, batteries, food and other supplies in anticipation of power outages. Nearly 284,000 residential properties valued at $88 billion are at risk for damage, risk analysts at CoreLogic said.

Transportation systems shut down in anticipation. Airlines canceled flights, bridges and tunnels closed, and national passenger rail operator Amtrak suspended nearly all service on the East Coast. The U.S. government told non-emergency workers in Washington, D.C., to stay home.

Utilities from the Carolinas to Maine reported late Sunday that a combined 14,000 customers were already without power.

The second-largest oil refinery on the East Coast, Phillips 66's 238,000 barrel per day (bpd) Bayway plant in Linden, New Jersey, was shutting down and three other plants cut output as the storm affected operations at two-thirds of the region's plants.

Oil prices slipped on Monday, with Brent near $109 a barrel. "With refineries cutting runs, we're likely to see a build-up in crude stocks which could be driving bearish prices at the moment," said Michael Creed, an economist at National Australia Bank in Melbourne.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the evacuation of some 375,000 people from low-lying areas of the city, from upscale parts of lower Manhattan to waterfront housing projects in the outer boroughs.

While Sandy's 85 mph winds were not overwhelming for a hurricane, its exceptional size means the winds will last as long as two days.

"This is not a typical storm," Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett said. "It could very well be historic in nature and in scope."

AMD promises 64-bit ARM-based Opteron server CPUs coming in 2014

AMD promises 64-bit ARM-based Opteron server CPUs coming in 2014

AMD has long stuck to x86 architecture for its server processors, but its gearing up to add 64-bit ARM-based Opteron CPUs to its arsenal in 2014. Sunnyvale also plans to reap the fruits of its SeaMicro acquisition by employing the company's "fabric" tech to link its ARM-based processors in clusters for maximizing efficiency. Where might these new processors come in handy? AMD thinks they'll fit nicely into clouds and "mega data centers" thanks to their power efficiency, but it'll let its x86-based hardware do the heavier lifting such as video encoding and rendering. Other details on the CPUs are scarce, but we suspect that'll change as 2014 approaches.

Arts & Entertainment by the Numbers, Part III - Movies - The ...

Potemkin

Continued from Part II

III. Movies

This commonplace entertainment for the masses?is actually very heterogeneous in its nature.? Cinema is a chimera: part visual crafts, part performance art, part continuous technological advancements.??

Since pre-historic times artists tried to capture the movements of their subjects.? The best?painters can make you feel as if the sea foam is?forming right there on?the canvas.? But it's just your imagination.? And so, since?3200 B.C., innovators applied mechanics, optics, and chemistry to?images?in order to?imitate the magic of natural motion.?

The fathers of?cinema, the Lumiere brothers, viewed it as nothing more than?a natural transition from still photography.? Their perforated film and the cinematograph gave birth to?a huge industrial machine?that to this day?generates products?in multiple copies deliverable to millions of consumers.

The newly found ability to record real life?and?chronicle historical events has revolutionized the?planet's infosphere, continuously providing us with?documents of great achievements and horrendous atrocities.? However, entrepreneurs of moving images have immediately recognized an opportunity to use the new medium as a portal for escaping the reality for a short while and introduced the performance arts into the mix.? Why not film actors in dramatic or comedic situations?? Why not?utilize the camera's mobility - take them off the stage and place?them into natural settings; bring the actions into a?garden, on the street,?on the beach?

(Aside:? Movie theaters still provide?the most affordable route of escape.? They get you out of work and home?surroundings, hide you in?the darkness, bring you into?the places you may never visit, and show?you lives of people?you will never meet.? Yet, you don't need to go very far or pay?too much money for the adventure.? That's why the experience of going to the movies persists no?matter how advance home and handheld entertainment?media get.)

Before long, the makers of moving pictures realized that the technology at their hands could also be used as a dramatic tool.? To this day, phrases like "cut for emotion" signify how the mechanical process of editing (cutting and gluing of the film) has a potential of creating unforgettable, heart-stopping moments, which elicit deep emotions in the viewing audience.?

Thus, imagery, performance, and technology?were merged together by people standing behind the camera and shouting commands at everyone.? Sergei Eisenstein (Battleship Potemkin, Alexander Nevsky, Ivan the Terrible) was immortalized as one of the first innovative film directors precisely because of his great talent of telling powerful stories by combining panoramic shots that make you feel threatened with close-ups that fill your soul with sadness.? In fact, European theorists call him the "Father of Montage."? ?

It goes without saying - filmmaking is a director's art (for many, the word "craft" is more appropriate).??The director's job is to?take a story and?make it alive on the screen.? To achieve this miracle,?he or she, akin Dr. Frankenstein,?need to combine different?elements and put them through multiple processing steps.? It's an intricate creative process, but?it is also?a tedious?organizational?endeavor, not much different from a?job of a?manufacturing general manager.??

Each main element of filmmaking has multiple subdivisions.? Performance arts: story development, screenwriting, casting, performance directing, acting, stunts,?music, sound, wardrobe design, makeup.? Image-making: lighting, cinematography, visual effects, production design, set decoration, art direction.? Technology: special effects, props,?production management, animation,?editing, etc. Each of these larger functions are further divided into subgroups, sectors,?tasks...? It doesn't matter whether all these duties are performed by 10 people or by a crew of 2,435 (The Avengers - the longest credit roll I've ever witnessed) -?it's up to the director to make sure that all the parts work together and everything congeals into the final product.

Nowadays, the advancement of digital applications blurs the lines between the visual and technological aspects of filmmaking. The development of computer-generated images (CGI) has become?its prominent property. We even have famous directors (James Cameron, George Lucas), who are involved first-hand in scientific innovations of moving-image technology.

Thanks to CGI, creators can conjure any situation born out of their imagination. Now, intergalactic spaceships and aliens look real; characters can turn into monsters right in front of your eyes; they fly through the sky and?jump out of airplanes.? Frequently people go to the movies just to see the spectacle at its maximum potential - in 3D, on IMAX screen, with surround sound.? Who cares what the movie is about?? I cannot wait for the time, when at the entrance instead of glasses you'll be handed a helmet.? Then right?from your seat?you will be?transported onto some planet, where hoofed creatures with striped tails and dragonfly eyes will take you by the hand...? What plot???

That said, with?a?humongous moviemaking machine?remaining unseen (and largely unknown),?at the end of the day, cinema is all about the actors on the screen.??They are the bait that lures?the majority of moviegoers?into spending their money.??Yeah, the trailer looks?good, and maybe the effects will blow your mind (literally), and the?story will?knock you out cold, but people cannot be sure of it until the movie is over.?

On the other hand,?everyone knows in advance?that?Anthony Hopkins can transform himself into anybody, Harrison Ford at 70?is still enticing,?Kristen Wiig is batshit funny,?Megan Fox looks fucking awesome in high-cut shorts, and Daniel Craig makes the most outrages 007 shenanigans believable.? Even picky (some say snooty) cenophiles like me, who?are concerned?with?the subtext, depth,?dialogue and directorial?mastery,?will excuse sub par filmmaking for the sake of watching an actor creating magic on the screen?(the late Heath Ledger would be a good example?for me).???

Besides my personal?endless fascination with?the cinema,?there is a?legitimate reason?for?going into?the?extended discussion of its?components in the context of?the financial enumeration.??The proportions of elements used in?manufacturing movies?not?only yield?distinctly different types of?products, they also?drive its financial aspects.

On a general level, a movie's Income Statement is fairly straightforward.? We've got tickets, DVDs, TV rights, etc. revenues on one side, and the cost of ingredients required for making the product on the other.? The total amount spent on a project is customarily called a "budget," regardless of whether it was set in advance or just?accumulated to be a certain sum.? This is a very important industry indicator, which is frequently made public.???

The budget elements?may?have?multi-million price tags or cost nothing at all, and anything in between.? Any "name" (i.e. famous) ingredient will cost a lot of money.??Any unknown, trying to break in, component can be obtained for free.? This is literally true about everything that goes into?the pressure cooker of?filmmaking.? I would have to?write another book just to go over every single line of?the various movie?budgets, but let me provide a few guidelines.?

It is safe to say that, as of right now, abundant CGI and megastars are the most expensive ingredients in the movie-making cupboard.? The high-tech companies specializing in movie magic charge by the man-hour.? And it's not like the rates are outrageous (the computer nerds make similarly decent salaries everywhere), but the processes are extremely time-consuming.? So, if "the vision" calls for a team of 200 people working for 12 weeks, a moderate average of $150 per hour will set you back by nearly $14.5 million.? For a team of 1000 people, multiply that by five, and so on.

Actors?in high demand (Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Robert Downy Jr., Tom Hanks, Jude Law,?etc.)?have compensation structure that includes a?salary base plus commissions.? The latter can be defined as gross participation, backend, box office bonuses, or residuals.? If the up front salary is $15 million?but?the movie returns several?times over the?invested budget, the total take could be around $50-$70 million.??

My favorite, even though outdated,?example of the?stars' budgetary impact is?the?1992 mega hit and critics' favorite A Few Good Men.? The three top-billing?actors, Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, and Demi Moore (in that order) had?the respective base salaries of?$12 million,?$5 million, and $3 million.? The total of $20 million took up 50% of the $40 million budget.

The movie's director, Rob Reiner, whose?company Castle Rock Entertainment also produced the film for Columbia Pictures, took the base?salary of $4 million, plus?a share of?residuals.??Just like with the actors, this is a common structure for directors.? The bases vary, of course.? Steven Spielberg's base for directing War Horse was $20 million; Martin Scorcese's base salary for Hugo?- $10 million; Guy Ritchie's for the Sherlock Holmes?sequel - $7.5 million (25% up from what he got?for the original).?

The directors, who, like Rob Reiner, produce their movies, tend to take smaller?salaries in order to maximize their back-end returns.??It works especially well if you've got a real blockbuster on your hands. ?One of the biggest earners in Hollywood,?the incredible James Cameron (Lightstorm Entertainment is his production company), so far?personally earned?$350 million on his uber-hit creation,?Avatar. But it's all good, since the movie has collected 12 times of its original $237 million budget ($2.8 billion) in worldwide box-office sales.

Mr. Cameron is an auteur - he writes, directs, produces, and frequently edits his movies.? His $115 million?Titanic's earnings, for example,?break down?like this: $600,000?for the screenplay, $8 million for directing, the rest - production residuals.?

These numbers?reflect?the monetary treatment of creative talent in Hollywood with an uncanny precision.? Comparatively speaking, the writers don't really make that much money.? Especially the ones who write original screenplays based on?their own ideas (aka specs) as opposed to the ones who take studio assignments.? Of course, the writers who?have the?knack for?consistently delivering tent poles (i.e. movies that support studios' lavish existence) can get themselves into seven digits, but even the record-high?screenwriting?salaries do not exceed $4 million.

The rest of the filmmaking functions (supporting cast, extras, cinematographers, line producers, designers, editors, etc., etc.) are performed by skilled professionals?whose minimum wage rates are protected by their respective unions and the maximum?depends on their?track record and their individual level of demand.? If someone's rate is $200?per day and?he?manages to?contract?himself for two 10-week engagements in a course of one year, the resulting earnings?will be $20K.??You are doing better with? $800 per day rate and a higher demand.?

If you become a sought after specialist with a proven delivery of high quality work,?your?compensation most likely will be switched to a flat weekly rate, or maybe even per-engagement compensation.? It is rumored that Rodrigo Prieto, the cinematographer whose?impressive portfolio includes such visual gems as 25th Hour, Brokeback Mountain, Babel and?Lust, Caution, has received $250,000 for the 10-week shooting of Argo.? Relatively speaking, this is quite impressive.? However,?he shoots on average two movies a year - you do the math.? ????????

From the executive producers' point of you,?Mr. Prieto is?a pretty fat budget line, but?the "look" he creates is a big contribution into that "Oscar buzz" they vie for.? And it's true about everything - locations, sets,?costumes, cars, stunts, quality of light, even?the food catered to the cast and crew.? You want a good soundtrack with famous, recognizable songs, then you have to pay large licensing fees to both the?owners of the music and the publishers who released the particular recording.??You want Alexandre Desplat to write the original score...? Well, that's a man in extremely high demand!??He's been?scoring on average?5-6?movies?a year for over 20 years now; 11 (!!!) last year alone.??So, his per-film prices are?definitely in seven figures.

On the other side of the spectrum are the beginners, who will and do work for free just to get their names out there.? Not just writers/directors/producers, but also?actors, composers, camera and sound specialists, editors,?techies - there are plenty of aspiring people, who are not even members of any unions yet.?

Ok, here how the movie mixology works.??An aspiring filmmaker writes, directs,?shoots, and?edits a?movie with?her school friends and family members?covering all the basic functions, including second-camera work,?light set-up, boom holding, etc.??There is a minimal cast?of non-union actors,?who?are grateful to?receive $100?per day pay.?? The?action takes place in one apartment generously provided by a friend and the shooting?is done in three days.??She?uses her own HD camera, but hires a?freelance sound engineer?with his equipment at a rate of $80 per hour.? And here you have a microbudget (a few thousand dollars) film that?can?be sent out to festivals and garner some screenings.

You can have three friends writing a screenplay, one of them directs the movie,?another one stars in?it - none of them get paid.? Practically everyone?on the production crew?is?a first-timer.??Most of?the action takes place?in one?apartment.??The $60,000 budget is primarily spent on renting equipment, light, sound, and minimal wages paid to some of the 60?members of the cast and crew.? Over 100 benefactors donate either money or services.? The result - Darren Aronofsky's cult masterpiece Pi, which goes to win nine international awards, including Sundance,?and?makes $3.2 million in the US alone.

In another recipe, based on a?dramatic play, adapted by the playwright himself (his first feature, so he is not asking too much), the filmmaking can still be fairly simple, almost as austere as the theatrical version itself: no CGI; mostly inside a studio with a few Manhattan, London, and British seaside shots; four protagonists and?only 16 extras; basic crew.? Essentially, this movie could've been made for less than $1 million.? But it's a?psychological drama and?the studio that acquired?the successful play hires a?daring director who's been?dissecting human dynamics for?40 years ?($8 million).? He, in his turn, picks the four actors that he believes at the moment (2004) to be the best match for the main characters (one of them reprises his stage performance) -?an?actress with a record-high salaries?($20 million), an A-list actor ($9.5 million), a?painfully beautiful 23-year-old actress?on her 12th movie (two of them were new Star Wars installments)?($1 million), and a?prominent British actor on his way to become a major Hollywood player (salary not reported).??These five people?pretty much make the entire?$40 million budget of Michael Nichols's Closer.

Now, mix together a hot international star?playing an iconic character for the third time?($12.8 million); a highly respected director?who won an Oscar for a movie that became an instant classic ($5 million);?a team of Hollywood writers?specializing in high-octane action blockbusters ($2 million); a cinematographer who shot, among others, every single of the Coen brothers' movies ($600 thousand); a supporting cast of 50, including a knighted actress, a Spanish superstar, and Ralph fucking Fiennes; hundreds of extras; a theme song by a pop star who broke all records with?her album sales and Grammies; a score by?a composer nominated for 10 Oscars; an Oscar-winning production designer; an Oscar nominated editor;?filming in London, Scotland, Shanghai, and Istanbul;?Smithfield Market car chase and?helicopter shots;?CGI that makes jumping out of the air into a fast-moving train look real and took 389 visual and special effects professionals to design; a stunt staff of 72 - and you got yourself an MGM tent pole with?a $200 million budget, i.e. Skyfall.?

You've got the?principle, right?? You can do it yourself - pick any movie, break it down into cost items,?and estimate the budget.? Making movies is an expensive business.?????????????

The funding for these?cinematic?cocktails?may come from various single or multiple resources: family and friends,?high personal wealth individuals with interest in arts (Michael Bloomberg, for?example, has been investing in movies for decades),?firms specializing in?film financing (such as Future Films), financial institutions, strong production companies with sufficient capital, and, of course, studios.? It's up to the producers, whether it's the beginning filmmaker himself or a?Hollywood power player, to pull together the sufficient funding to cover the movie's budget.?

Theoretically,?all projects?financed by any means other than a?big studio's funds are considered?to be "independent" movies.??Not too long ago we believed that?the?positive side of not having big bucks from the Big?Bad?Wolves?was?a filmmaker's ability to avoid the market-demand concerns.??Those were the good old days...???

Like with?any other form of arts and entertainment, there are two?distinct?types of "success"?for movies: the inexact, flawed, and unfairly subjective?artistic achievement (measured in festival wins, awards, critical praises, and cult-like fan following) and simple, solid, and undeniable commercial success (measured in?dollars and cents).? Most of the movies achieve one or another, rarely - both.

Of all branches of entertainment, the motion pictures industry scores the largest audiences.? Miranda July's Me and You and Everyone We Know, commercially speaking, is a small movie - it was made on a $2 million budget and grossed $3.9 million in the box office (it also won 17 international awards, among them four in Cannes, including the Camera d'Or).? However, this means that 300,000 people went to see the movie - 39 times more than those who bought Miranda July's collection of stories No One Belongs Here More Than You.? If a music album achieved a number like this it would be certified as a triple platinum.?

Now, think about really big hits - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part II made $169 million in its opening weekend in the US ($1.33 billion worldwide gross to date).? This means that in the first three days of its release here, over 12 million people went to see this film. ? ? ?

The theaters showing the movies pay either a bidding fixed amount or a percentage of the box office for the right to show the movie; the balance is remitted to the distribution company (the same pattern applies to DVD sales and TV rights).? The distribution company that picked up the movie for sale from a studio or a production company also takes either fixed fees (leasing model) or 10-50% of the net profit (profit-sharing model).? Whatever is left comes to the producing entities.? Hopefully this remainder covers the budget (pays back the investors) and leaves the room for the residuals. ?

Clearly, the business of making movies is a high-stake financial gamble.? The funds are invested into making a product of frequently unpredictable quality and then you wait and see what happens.? No matter how much money studios spend on the market research, no matter how?strong the producers' sixth sense is, you just never fucking know.? Who could possibly predict that a first feature written and directed by a 26-year-old Steven Soderbergh, Sex Lies and Videotape, will not only multiply its 1.2 million budget by 20 in the box office, but will make the filmmaker the youngest person in history to win Cannes top prize - Palme D'Or.

Essentially,?every single movie project is a start-up business.? I will let my readers to go on IMdB and count how many businesses the?Hollywood powerhouses, like the Weinstein brothers or Scott Rudin, originated and?brought to a full success.

The Daily Bell - Reporter Exposes Tax Evasion Among Greek ...

Warrant out for Greek journalist over leak of politicians' alleged tax evasion ... Greek prosecutors have issued a warrant for the arrest of one of the country's top journalists, after his publication Hot Doc released the so-called 'Lagarde list' containing the names of some 2,000 Greeks with funds hidden in Swiss bank accounts. Greek police aim to detain Kostas Vaxevanis, the owner and editor of Hot Doc, for alleged privacy violations from publishing the list of names dated to 2007. "Instead of arresting the tax evaders and the ministers who had the list in their hands, they are trying to arrest the truth and free journalism," Vaxevanis said in an interview published online. The speaker of the Greek Parliament, several Finance Ministry employees and a number of business leaders all reportedly had Swiss HSBC bank accounts. ? RT

Dominant Social Theme: These taxes must be paid ? by Greek citizens, anyway.

Free-Market Analysis: So it turns out that many Greek politicians have Swiss bank accounts and are not paying taxes due. What does this tell us about "austerity"?

... Only that it is a meme, as we have previously discussed.

What is going on in Greece and elsewhere is that a small clique of powerful European politicos and their (banking) backers are insisting on IMF-style austerity. This includes tax hikes and authoritarian measures to enforce them.

In fact, more and more it seems the real reason for "austerity" is to provide a pretext for Draconian tax collection. This would be in keeping with the idea that this crisis, apparently manufactured, was always intended to provide the EU with more political authority.

The PIGS ? with a culturally lackadaisical attitude about taxation ? were to be brought in line via austerity. That's what is going on now.

It is NOT about taxes. It is about the primacy of the state's privilege to extract tithes. This perspective is brought home by news, reported (above) by RT. Here's some more from the article:

The Hot Doc article revealed that data matched that of Christine Lagarde, the former French finance minister who in 2010 provided her Greek counterpart a list of names of those alleged to have large sums of money stashed away in Swiss banks.

Citing privacy concerns for individuals on the list, Hot Doc said it had redacted exact bank balance figures, but added that some accounts contained as much as 500 million euros.

The Greek government took no action at the emergence of the first 'Lagarde list.' Tax evasion has become a hotly contested issue, as the country's parliament is expected to vote on a new 13.5 billion euro austerity package that most Greeks oppose.

On Friday, the office of former Prime Minister George Papandreou denied accusations that he knew about the list, after a member of the opposition Syriza party asserted that Papandreou had helped arrange a meeting with the chief of the Geneva HSBC branch when he was in power.

Bad enough that the reporter from Hot Doc is being pursued. But we can also see from this reporting that there is no great enthusiasm to delve into the issue of political tax evasion generally.

In fact, RT reports that former Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou was asking the country's financial crimes unit to investigate about 20 Greeks suspected of maintaining large holdings in Geneva, after French authorities forwarded him the list in 2010. This is a minimal number.

Further, Papaconstantinou himself doesn't seem enthusiastic about the probe. "He ... claimed that the Finance Ministry's legal adviser had told him that using the list as evidence was problematic, since an HSBC employee had illegally leaked it."

Such a stance as regards legal niceties is ludicrous ? not too strong a word ? given what's going in Europe and Greece (and the PIGS generally). None of it is "legal." All of it brutally tramples on the rights of EU citizens.

This is the reality. The double standard becomes ever more evident. The power elite behind the Eurozone and its consolidation is not interested in the larger philosophical issue. It is not interested in attacking politicians because politicians serve the state.

The results cannot be good in this era of what we call the Internet Reformation. People can read for themselves what is going on in ways they never could before.

In this case, given the blood and violence surrounding the tax issue in Greece, the idea that Greek administrators are indulging in the same tax evasion that Greek citizens are being attacked for is bound to further alienate the Greek electorate.

Here's how Kostas Vaxevanis puts it: "The fact is that for the last 30-40 years, the rich in Greece has enjoyed a kind of tax immunity. They're not really tax evaders, they're immune from tax because of the cozy relationship that they have with politicians who legislate in a way that makes that tax immunity."

Of course, we part ways with Vaxevanis. Tax immunity sounds fine to us. Get rid of central banking, get rid of the income tax and reduce taxes generally to a minimum and state privilege would be appropriately constrained.

We're in favor of a government that governs least, not an activist regime. Most government services can surely be provided better and more efficiently by private interests.

Conclusion: What is also true is that the more these kinds of issues are exposed, the more cynical people become. This is contributing to the larger atmosphere of secessionism that we've noted on these pages previously.

Hurricane Sandy: how utilities are planning for power outages

Hurricane Sandy's wide wind field could affect much of the East Coast, and utility companies are preparing for power outages. One pioneering program could help. But what about drones?

By Mark Clayton,?Staff writer / October 27, 2012

With utility companies analyzing potential storm tracks for hurricane Sandy and deciding just how many utility crews to request to prepare for fallen power lines, Seth Guikema could be their best friend.

He is part of a pioneering attempt to help power companies allocate their men and equipment accurately by predicting how many people will be without power and where most outages will occur.

With forecasters predicting hurricane Sandy's landfall anywhere from Delaware to Massachusetts, his job is tough. But it is one part of the effort to improve upon power companies' widely criticized response to hurricane Irene last year, when hundreds of thousands of customers along the East Coast went without power for days. Some utilities are even talking about using drone aircraft to diagnose problem areas more quickly.

"We're seeing a lot better coordination this time between government and private utilities," says Mark Merritt, president of Witt Associations, a public safety and crisis management consulting firm in Washington. "There's a lot of effort going on right now to understand what the needs are and where."

Getting power back fast after an outage is a balancing act. Utilities managers who get it right have just enough men and trucks to do the job quickly, but not so many that they waste money. Get it wrong, and you feel the wrath of consumers.

Using a computer model, Dr. Guikema and his team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore are trying to help improve this decisionmaking process. Knowing how many people will lose power and where depends a lot on the quality of the data available. But Sandy is making that difficult.

"There's still a lot of uncertainty in the forecast tracks, so that makes it challenging in a case like this one," says Guikema, an assistant professor of geography and environmental engineering at Johns Hopkins' Whiting School of Engineering. "We take a track and then estimate the level of gusting winds and wind impact across the area and the damage it will cause ? as well as the fraction of the people within each census track that will lose power."

The storm has grown daily with tropical-storm force winds extending 275 miles from the center, report researchers at the University of Miami. But that is expected to grow quickly with a "large wind field" impacting much of the East Coast.

Data from power companies can also help make forecasts more accurate, Guikema says. So far, one company has shared its data with his team.

"For our predictions to be useful there has to be enough lead time to call up the crews and materials," he says. "We aim to deliver data three to five days in advance. Right now, though, we're at the outer edge of the forecast, so there's still a lot of uncertainty."

For now, the team is running its model on the multiple tracks and refining that as the tracks converge. With hurricane Irene last August, the track was clear far sooner. The model suggested that utilities in the Maryland region were likely to need far more personnel than they initially planned ? and it was proven correct. One utility, he says, announced before Irene arrived that it had a couple hundred crews to handle an expected 100,000 outages. But thousands of crews were eventually needed to handle about 630,000 outages.

Connecticut utilities, which also ran into problems after Irene, are reportedly among those calling up the 5,000 power company personnel requested for the Boston-Connecticut area. Other utilities, including those in Maryland and Washington, are ramping up personnel, too.

But drones? That's not a done deal, Mr. Merritt adds.

"There's a lot of sensitivity about drones," he says. "So it may not happen. But it would probably get the power back on faster."
