TORONTO?-?

Mayor Rob Ford finally caught with a beverage in hand?

Bingo. Gotcha?

Say it ain?t so?

And what kind of ale is that, Mr. Mayor?

My email, voicemail and Twitter accounts were full of comments and speculation.

?I thought you quoted Doug Ford and others saying they had never seen Rob with a drink,? said one. ?Great shot, Scrawler, you got the evidence and now so does everybody.?

Things are not always as they appear. Sometimes you have to do some extra reporting to get to the bottom of things.

Still, it was a pretty good picture. A jubilant Mayor Ford and his brother Councillor Doug Ford at the Maple Leafs-Bruins playoff game Monday after Phil Kessel scored in the third period.

Some of the loudest cheering for the Buds was coming from the mayor.

But yes, he did have a drink in his hand.

And in light of the Toronto Star story earlier this year questioning his alcohol consumption and quoting friends expressing concern, I wondered, too.

I actually heard from fans who told me they saw Ford in the Leafs alumni lounge ?pounding back some beer.?

Who cares?

It was the first Maple Leafs playoff game in nine years and what?s wrong with having some brews at the game?

Of course, with the media coverage on the mayor, accusations of being out of it at public functions, and the history of getting into a verbal dustup at a hockey game before he was mayor, it?s probably worth checking out.

When I went up to the private box, I did see that the mayor had a drink in his hand, a smile on his face and a Maple Leafs sweater on his back.

He looked like he was having fun and who wouldn?t. Johnny Bower was up there and other Leafs alumni like Bob Nevin and Kevin Maguire.

But still I had to ask.

?What you drinking, Mr. Mayor??

?Just some pop,? he said with a grin.

?A wobbly pop??

Rather than guess, I grabbed his glass and with his permission took a sip.

I thought my old journalism instructor at Canadore College way back when would think this was pretty good first-person reporting and a noble effort for verification with no need for extra expense of having this substance sent away to the lab for testing.

Would Woodward and Bernstein have thought of that?

Familiar taste it was.

It was not beer. But it was an ale.

Ginger ale.

Yep. That is what it was.

But just to be thorough, I took a second sip to make sure there was no hard stuff mixed in there.

Nope. It was pure ginger ale. Scout?s honour.

?You want one?? teased the mayor.

I think even Councillor Adam Vaughan wouldn?t deny him that indulgence.

The mayor, who by the way was sober as a judge is at least supposed to be, was having fun with this too.

?I knew people would think I was drinking in here,? he said.

I do admit to not being intrepid enough of a reporter to ask if it was a diet ginger ale, though.

Sorry to those in the bunkers in the War on Ford but this story may have had ice but no legs.

But on second thought, I guess I got the scoop of the night. Mayor Ford got caught drinking an ale and I have the pictorial evidence to prove it.

It would have been a bigger story if it had been the non-ginger type, but it?s still worth noting not many mayors in Canada can make headlines for not taking a drink.

Do you care if Mayor Rob Ford were to have a beer at a hockey game?
