Swaddle-maker swamped after UK prince's photo-op

LONDON (AP) ? It took 45 seconds, but it was enough.

Newborn Prince George, carried from the hospital to the royal car, appeared in a cotton swaddle with the tiny birds on it. Mums-to-be around the world wanted to know: Who are you wearing?

The answer shows what it is like when a small company gets swept into the maelstrom of attention that comes from touching the golden hem of the House of Windsor.

Once the photos of the swaddle hit the Internet, style bloggers and fashion writers identified the would-be king's new clothes as being from New York-based aden + anais. Within four hours of George's appearance, the website crashed. The next day, the site crashed again. In nine days, the company had 7,000 orders ? a 600 percent increase in sales on that item.

The company never even issued a press release. Anyone who wanted to know the manufacturer simply had to type "royal swaddle" into Google, and up it came.

Raegan Moya-Jones, the chief executive of aden + anais, was about to start a meeting when a colleague brought in the picture. She couldn't believe it.

"I thought it was photo-shopped," she said.

The company is still digging out from under a pile of orders for the swaddle, part of the Jungle Jam pack of four that in Britain costs 44.95 pounds ($68).

The average daily visits to its site were off the charts: In Britain, they were up 1,960 percent; in Australia, up 892 percent; in Japan 791 percent and in the U.S., up 458 percent.

So just be prepared to wait if you want to similarly swaddle your little prince or princess. Jungle Jam is sold out for now in Britain and the United States. Desperate swaddle searchers can find them on the company's Australian site if they hurry. Shipping fees are extra.

And there's a factory run from China of 10,000. So hold on.

People just want to be a part of things says Cele Otnes, a professor of marketing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and co-author of the upcoming book "Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture." She said the rush to buy whatever the royals wear gives admirers a chance to participate in a big, happy event.

"This is history," she said. "If you can't be there, if you can't have a royal baby yourself, you can buy the swaddle."

The royals do grant warrants ? a mark of recognition of those who supply goods or services to the Royal Household. Fortnum & Mason has one for example, for being a "Grocer & Provision Merchant" to the monarch. But there are no royal adverts.

Nonetheless the royals remain marketing gold.

They have always been trendsetters. Even Queen Victoria once promoted a ball to help the Spitalfields silk industry, Otnes said. More recently, Princess Diana's every ruffled collar or bow-lined stocking could set off the cash registers.

But Prince George is the first heir to the throne born in the Internet age. New mums and dads can see what Kate and Wills and ? now baby George ? are wearing and buy it instantly.

This goes way beyond commemorative china, tea towels and other trinkets ? the traditional sort of souvenir that shoppers can pick up at the Buckingham Palace gift store.

There's even a name for it: the Kate Effect. It started with the sapphire blue wrap dress designed by Daniella Helayel that the then-Kate Middleton wore to announce her engagement ? and just kept going. Take the white dress Kate wore in the couple's engagement photo ? sold by UK retailer Reiss ? or Topshop's black dress with a Peter Pan collar that she wore for a video appeal.

Fashionistas follow Kate's every move. Every blouse, shoe, and bag the future queen of England wears is fodder for style bloggers and a money-spinner for retailers.

She's been democratic about it ? choosing stuff that is accessible to the average person and supporting British products in a big way.

And now there's George, who isn't even wearing clothes yet but has managed to get blankets out the door. And it isn't just the ones from aden + anais. Little George first appeared in a white crocheted blanket from G.H. Hurt & Son of Nottingham, England. They are swamped with orders, too, after photographers zeroed in on the firm's label, blew it up and posted it on the net.

And yet, this is just the start. Otnes said that the trend will just continue as George gets older. Get ready for the booties, the scooter, the sun hat. Firms can get overwhelmed by the attention, which comes fast, hot and for a limited time only.

"You had better hold on," Otnes advised companies in the limelight. "And put on another shift."

Moya-Jones, a native of Australia who started in the swaddle business because she couldn't find what she wanted in stores, didn't anticipate the royal wave. Even though aden + anais have wrapped the babies of celebs like Beyonce, the spotlight that turned on her company with Prince George was altogether different.

After all, her privately held company isn't huge ? founded seven years ago, it has 65 full-time employees and about as many part-time staff. In addition to swaddles, aden + anais makes sleeping bags, bibs, blankets and sheets, and Moya-Jones doesn't want to put so much emphasis on Jungle Jam swaddles that customers who want other products feel they are being ignored.

And then there's the shock factor ? even if it was a happy shock. The company didn't send the royals their product and expect them to use it. That's just not done.

Moya-Jones only learned after she saw pictures that Kate reportedly picked out the muslin swaddle personally at a London store.

"That's the nicest thing," she said. "At the end of the day, the duchess is a first-time mum, like all of us once were."

Just another working family: the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and baby Prince George. (Credit: Kirsty Wigglesworth, AP)

We've all got to work for a living. Even those of us who are royal.

On Prince George's birth registry, unveiled today at the Westminster Register Office in London, Dad William dutifully filled in all the sections, including the part about the baby's father's occupation, in which he wrote in neat, loopy cursive "Prince of the United Kingdom." Mom Kate's job? "Princess of the United Kingdom."

Nice work, if you can get it.

William's name and surname are listed as "His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis Duke of Cambridge" - whew - while his wife is a relatively pithy "Catherine Elizabeth Middleton," her maiden name spelled out in block capital letters.

Still, there are few working stiffs who can legally sign off a formal document with a single sobriquet, as the Duke of Cambridge did, scrawling simply "William" at the bottom.

Jack White fires back at ex-wife in court docs

Former White Stripes singer Jack White has provided an answer in court to his former wife Karen Elson, who had a restraining order issued against him last week and has petitioned that he submit to a psychiatric exam.

Rolling Stone obtained court documents from Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville in which White objects to being characterized as an unfit father to their two children. In the countermotion, his lawyer Cathy Speers Johnson writes, "The reason for filing this response is that Mr. White does not want to be portrayed as something he is not, violent toward his wife and children."

The note also refers to emails the pair sent one another, including one dated May 19, 2013, where she calls him an "amazing father." The motion for a psychiatric exam is described as "inflammatory . . . . disingenuous, fraudulent and retaliatory and simply designed to malign him in the public record or to gain an upper hand in this litigation."

He said he did not oppose the restraining order, but objected to limited communication with his children.

White noted that Elson left the children in his care after signing the restraining order affidavit and then went on a "work/pleasure trip" in New York. "One who was truly fearful of another would not leave their children alone with that person for 10 days," the response noted. "The truth of the matter is that Ms. Elson is not fearful for herself or the parties' minor children."

In Elson's filing, she had referred to a musician White had particular enmity toward ? going so far as to wanting to have his child removed from a class where that musician's child was also taking part ? and White's countermotion revealed that the singer in question was The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach.?

In one email, writes? The Hollywood Reporter, White called Aeurbach a "derogatory name" and said he didn't want to spend the next 12 years of their children's schooling "with people trying to lump us together."

White's spokesperson told THR that he would only comment in court filings on the case, and Auerbach's spokesperson said he had no comment. Auerbach?is also going through a divorce, as announced in February.

ASUS' 31.5-inch PQ321 4K monitor gets reviewed: pricey, but luscious

ASUS' 315inch PQ321 4K monitor gets reviewed pricey, but luscious

Let's be honest: almost no one expected one of the world's first 4K monitors to be ho hum. After all, it has eleventy gazillion pixels. Er, a native 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, but close enough. The gurus over at HotHardware were able to take the 31.5-inch PQ321 for a spin, and predictably, they loved what they saw. Outside of being duly impressed with how the panel handled everything from Photoshop work to gaming, they were also taken aback by the monitor's svelte frame. In fact, they found it a little tough to look back on a 1080p screen after a couple of weeks with this thing -- it's like the SD-to-HD revolution all over again. That said, they did confess that the product feels a bit ahead of its time, and the monstrous $3,500 price tag is certainly indicative of that. Feel free to hit the source link for the full spiel, but the long and short of it is this: if you're in the one percent, buy it.

Mayor believes stadium is good investment

Topics:? debt, mackay regional council, money, nrl, virgin australia stadium

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the stadium is a great asset.
Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the stadium is a great asset.

RATEPAYERS have paid off more than $600,000 of debt, which was left in the hands of the Mackay Regional Council after it took over operations of the Virgin Australia Stadium.

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said it wasn't "pleasant" to have to tell the community the extent of the $635,000 bill, which includes paying off outstanding power bills, wages and the cost of hosting NRL matches.

But she is confident the $11.3?million stadium is a solid investment for the community.

The public was invited to attend yesterday morning's press conference, and councillors showed a united front, with many of them watching the mayor address the media pack. Council is in the process of developing a business plan to manage the cost of the stadium, she said.

"The key is ... that we will develop a business plan, so we can ensure for our community that we can run this as effectively, and cost effectively as we can," Cr Comerford said.

The current Virgin Australia Stadium manager, Julie Anderson, will finish up in early September, and a senior officer at the MECC will take charge. At the moment there is a $200,000 line in the council budget allocated to fund the running of the stadium.

The Bulldogs versus Knights NRL match, which was played only a month after council was in control of the stadium, ran at an $185,000 loss.

But $450,000 of debts were left to council, when they took over operations.

"There were power bills outstanding for about $70,000 and it was also down to maintenance and cleaning bills, fire alarm maintenance ... top dressing the field," she said.

"So those figures are real bills owed to real businesses in Mackay. And one can say ... council was doing the right thing by many local businesses in our community."

Reader poll

Do you believe the stadium is a good investment?

POSSIBILITY OF NO MORE NRL GAMES

THE stadium won't host another NRL game if councillors know it will run at a loss.

That's the opinion of Mayor Deirdre Comerford.

She said they would have to know if events like that would, at the least, "break even", to get a green light by councillors.

Bulldogs? Ben Barba evades a tackle from Knights? Jarrod Mullen during the NRL match held at Virgin Australia Stadium last month.

"But it is clear to say, we can still see the value of having an NRL match, for a variety of reasons," she said.

Cr Comerford has been in meetings with NRL officials to discuss the stadium's best bet at hosting an event.

The previous match was a huge learning curve, and things would change if another game of that scale was to be held at the stadium.

"There are better ways to do things for the future," she said.

However, the Virgin Australia Stadium has key events coming up.

Mackay District Rugby League has secured a deal to host their grand final match later this year.

And on September 21 the stadium will be filled with big hats and boots when the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) bring their show to Mackay.

Cr Comerford said, if the opportunity to host another musical spectacular, like March's KISS concert, came about, council would absolutely look into it.

?

CUTTERS HOPE TO STAY

THE Mackay Cutters have called the Virgin Australia Stadium home for two years, and executive officer Glenn Ottaway hopes it will stay that way.

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the agreement allowing the Cutters to stay on board at the stadium would be looked at in council's development plan.

"Certainly they are currently tenants at the stadium and they will be part of the business plan going forward, so they will need to pay their way," she said.

Mr Ottaway said increased cost on the Cutters would be a huge burden on the club.

"We are a not-for-profit organisation, everything we earn is from the support of sponsors and the community, but 100% of what we make goes back into the club," he said.

Cr Comerford said the Cutters were unique, in comparison to other clubs, as they didn't have a leagues club with poker machines pooling in money for them.

Mr Ottaway said Cutters and council officials had been meeting regularly, even daily, to discuss operations at the stadium. He said he was promised by council they would ride out the rest of the season, and was confident they could make an agreement with council.

Stocks close at fresh highs on upbeat economic data

stocks

Stocks soared to fresh closing highs on Thursday, one day before the government releases critical jobs figures that could help determine whether the economy is healthy enough for the Federal Reserve to begin to slow down its stimulus package.

The rally, in which the S&P 500 went through the 1,700-point level for the first time, was sparked by a plethora of upbeat economic data ahead of the widely-watched jobs report set for Friday morning.

Analysts polled by Reuters expect to see a gain of 184,000 jobs in July, after a 195,000 uptick in the previous month.?

(Read more:?July jobs report key to Fed action)

"The jobs numbers have been decent as of late, but the problem is the quality of employment," said Lance Roberts, chief economist at StreetTalk Advisors. "There's also clearly a divergence between the stock market and real economy and that's because of the artificial stimulus from the Fed.

"The problem is that they're not seeing that stimulus being translated into the economy so the worry we should have is that we're inflating valuations and the issue of potentially blowing an asset bubble is very real."

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve?declined to signal when it would start tapering its bond-buying program, which has buoyed the markets. However, it did raise concerns about rising mortgage rates and flagged the risks of inflation falling too far below its target. In addition, the central bank slightly downgraded its outlook for economic growth.

But several reports on Thursday boosted the views of many analysts that the economy is getting healthier. Weekly jobless claims?dropped to a 5-1/2 year low, according to the Labor Department. And the number of planned layoffs at U.S. firms?declined modestly in July, with employers announcing 37,701 cuts last month, down 4.2 percent from June, according to the report from consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

In another positive sign, the pace of growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector accelerated in July to the?highest level since June 2011 as new orders surged, according to the Institute for Supply Management.?

The positive economic data have stimulated the stock markets recently. Major stock averages closed out their?best July since 2010 on Wednesday and so far this year, the Dow and S&P 500 have spiked more than 19 percent, while the Nasdaq has surged an impressive 21 percent.

On Thursday, the?Dow Jones Industrial Average spiked to close 128 points higher and set a fresh all-time high of 15,650.69, lifted by Bank of America and P&G. ExxonMobil was among the few Dow components in the red.

The?S&P 500 and the?Nasdaq both put on 1 percent, with the S&P 500 piercing the 1700 barrier to close at 1706.87. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, slid below 13.

All key S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by financials and industrials.

"The rising asset prices will help instill confidence and that will breed more confidence," said Matthew Kaufler, portfolio manager of the Clover Value Fund at Federated.?

"However, we've had a great run in the market and at some point there will be a correction in the near point?still, my sense would be that there's enough momentum that we'll end the year up a few percentage points higher than where we currently are."

(Read more:Short the S&P atall-time highs? Absolutely!)

Asian stocks rallied after China's official PMI (purchasing manager's index) data showed the country's manufacturing sector continued to expand in July, defying forecasts of a contraction. But the picture was mixed, with a private gauge of factory activity by HSBC showing an 11-month low of 47.7 in July. Japan's Nikkei rallied to a one-month peak on the news, the Shanghai Composite hit a one-week high and South Korea's Kospi touched a seven-week high.

"Official PMI is more skewed to larger companies, and the HSBC figure reflects the smaller companies and that is where you get this divergence," said Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian economics research at HSBC.

(Read more: Will China PMI mark the end of negative data surprises?)

In Europe, the European Central Bank kept its main interest rate unchanged at a record low of 0.5 percent, and reiterated that rates would remain at present or lower levels for an extended period of time.

"Labor market conditions remain weak. Looking ahead to the remainder of the year and 2014, euro area growth should benefit from a gradual recovery in global demand," said ECB president Mario Draghi in a press conference following the announcement. "Our monetary policy stance remains accommodative for as long as necessary. We have unanimously confirmed the forward guidance we gave last time."

Euro zone manufacturing activity grew for the first time in two years in July, with the purchasing manager's index (PMI) climbing to 50.3 in July. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion.

And the Bank of England left its interest rates unchanged at 0.5 percent, as expected, under its new governor, Mark Carney.

Kim Kardashian Posts 'Baby North' Pic on Facebook in Obnoxious Stunt (PHOTO)

kim kardashianKim Kardashian decided to take a quick break from the cozy bubble she and baby North West have been living in for the past few months to post a photo to Facebook. Specifically, a photo where she's cuddling a swaddled up newborn while sister Kourtney lovingly looks on. Kim captioned the pic, "Love these precious moments."

Now, if you didn't know better, you'd think that was a photo of Kim and her baby, being that A) she just had one, and B) the world, sadly, is waiting with bated breath to see Kim and/or baby North. But no. It's a photo from a few years ago. And the baby Kim's holding? It's Mason.

So, I guess those of us who thought Kim really was hiding from the media solely to be with her baby instead of as an epic publicity stunt, egg on our face.

We learned last week that Kim plans on making her debut some time in the very near future. So, I guess she's building the tension now with trickery like this. Why else would she post something like this to Facebook? Of course we're all going to get in a tizzy when we see Kim cradling a mystery baby.

More From Our Partners: You Won't Believe How Much Kim Kardashian Spent On a Car Seat

In my heart of hearts, I do think motherhood has changed Kim. How could it not? But I definitely think this "Kim in hiding" business is more for money and publicity reasons than for "wanting to spend time with my baby" reasons. I wanted to believe that wasn't the case, but with a stunt like this, how could it not be? Just show us the baby, Kim; collect your ginormous paycheck; and let's get on with it already.

Do you think Kim is in hiding for publicity reasons?

Ohio rates, services to increase under health law

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Health insurance rates in Ohio will rise an average of 18 percent for small businesses and 41 percent for individuals participating in the new marketplaces created by the federal health care law, state insurance officials said Thursday.

The details were the first glimpse of what Ohioans could see should they purchase private insurance in the exchanges created by President Barack Obama's health care law.

The increases in rates are partly due to consumers receiving more benefits under the plans than previously available.

Individuals can get private health insurance, subsidized by the federal government, through the exchange. Open enrollment starts Oct. 1, and coverage takes effect in January.

Republican Gov. John Kasich chose to let Washington operate the exchange, instead of having the state set up its own.

The state's insurance department said the figures don't take into account any government help that Ohioans could get to pay for their coverage.

State regulators approved 200 plans from 12 companies for the individual market and 184 plans from six companies for the small business market.

The number of plans available to consumers will differ by region, the department said. But small businesses should have two to three plans to pick from while individuals could choose from at least four plans.

The state's insurance department calculated the increase in rates by taking the average cost of premiums for all the plans in the exchange, and then comparing them to the average premiums of all plans available in the state at the end of 2012.

The agency's analysis found that the current average monthly cost for individuals was $236.29, compared with an expected average rate of $332.58 next year. The current average monthly rate for small businesses was $341.03, which the state expects to go up to $401.99 next year.

Deputy shot, inmate critically wounded at Boston hospital

WHDH-TV

Police officers stand outside Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston on Wednesday.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

A prisoner tried to wrestle a gun away from a sheriff's deputy Wednesday at a Boston hospital, firing a bullet into the deputy's leg, before a second deputy shot the inmate in the chest, authorities said.

Both men, who weren't immediately identified, were being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital. The prisoner was in critical condition, while the deputy was reported stable with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two Middlesex County deputies had taken the handcuffed inmate to Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary for treatment shortly before noon ET, said Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis.

Once the handcuffs were removed in the lobby of the emergency department, the prisoner made a grab for one of the deputies' guns, he said.

"The two individuals fell to the floor and a round was fired, and one of the deputy sheriffs suffered a gunshot wound to the leg," Davis said. "At that point in time, the other sheriff apparently discharged his weapon, striking the suspect."

Davis said the facility was put on temporary lockdown but wasn't evacuated.?

"Everybody is either in the hospital or in custody," he said.

Jennifer Street, a vice president at the Infirmary, said the hospital was open but "our emergency department is closed for now."

The Middlesex County Sheriff's Office said it had no immediate comment.?

"Right now, we are focused on the safety and well-being of the officers involved," it said in a brief statement.
