Customer Dissatisfaction: Why Containment Is Not An Option ...

Customer Dissatisfaction CartoonThis often leads to younger companies adopting reactive customer service strategies that do not prioritize finding ways to systematically reduce customer dissatisfaction and, rather, just try to contain customer service issues. This approach almost always results in an endemic problem with high customer loss rates down the road and substantially higher long-term customer service costs. Both of these problems usually spell disaster for a startup or expansion-stage company.

So why is customer dissatisfaction such a powerful force that needs to be addressed in a company?s customer service strategy? Below are four customer dissatisfaction characteristics that highlight why adopting a proactive customer service strategy is the logical choice:

  1. Dissatisfied customers are much more emotional than satisfied customers, and consequently much more likely to share their experiences with others. Just think of the customer experiences you have had over the last year. Most people will find the majority of the ones they remember and shared with others were negative experiences. Additionally, negative customer experiences lead to much more substantial reactions than positive customer experiences.
  2. Customers rarely complain to service providers directly. In fact, most of the time customers opt to complain to others or take their complaints to the internet. With social media listening techniques much of this can be captured. However, once complaints have reached the social media waves they are public and no longer a private issue.
  3. The growing popularity of social media has amplified the reach of customer opinions. This effect has had a disproportionately large effect on customer dissatisfaction because negative sentiment is more likely to go viral. Just think about all the negative customer stories you can remember going viral on the internet over the last few years. One that remains clear in my mind is EJ?s AirBnB.com nightmare story that single handedly threw the company into disaster recovery mode. I bet you can?t think of a positive customer story garnering that kind of attention.
  4. Customer expectations continue to grow at an astounding rate. What was considered an adequate response time or handling of a service issue yesterday is today considered below expectations. Just a few years ago a 24 hour response time to a customer complaint was considered top in class performance in most markets. Now many customers expect immediate responses to their social media communications. These constantly changing market dynamics have made it difficult and costly for companies to maintain top performance levels. To make these new demands more manageable companies have to focus more effort towards eliminating systematic issues and not being more effective at resolving them.

For these reasons, startups and expansion-stage companies need to prioritize customer service and adequately invest in developing a proactive customer service strategy.

Proactive customer service strategies are the product of including a mixture of proactive and reactive customer service key performance indicators that the company tracks in its service division. By incorporating proactive metrics, you will encourage the service team to develop systematic approaches to deal with customer dissatisfaction, not just finding better ways to resolve customer issues and contain them. However, it is also important to develop a service-oriented culture across the company, as this will lead to a long-term focused customer service strategy.

Skating on fun ice ? Bangor Daily News ? BDN Maine

This winter, welcome the quintessential tradition of ice skating as soon as the ice gets hard or a rink is opened.

Imagine it: You arrive at the ice rink all bundled up. You lace on a pair of skates ? figure, recreational, or hockey ? and once arriving at the ice, you glide easily across it.

Advanced skaters may do jumps and spins while newer skaters will slowly shuffle across the ice. Little ones will hold the hands of the adults who brought them. Couples cuddle side-by-side as they support each other around the rink.

The vision ? a Norman Rockwell painting of brightly colored scarves, knit hats, and smiles that stretch from ear to ear.

But there are a few things smart skaters ? and hopeful skaters ? should know before hitting the ice.

Get the right gear

While consumers can purchase ice skates from most department stores, purchasing skates from a specialty shop can save time and money in the long run.

According to Rick Gunn, owner of Gunn?s Sports Shop at 32 Greenpoint Road in Brewer, novices should get started with a basic pair of skates. His family-owned business has been serving skaters for almost 37 years.

According to Gunn, hockey-style skates or recreational skates share a similar look and their rounded blade with no toe pick are best for the newbie skater.

?Most beginner figure skaters use the toe pick inappropriately and can develop bad technique,? Gunn said. ?Proper technique is important so it doesn?t matter what you learn on.?

He added that there are three essential things to consider when choosing ice skates: proper support, the right fit to allow room for growth, and correctly sharpened blades. Specialty shops often include sharpening in the price of the skates.

?Skates don?t come already sharpened,? he said.

Purchasing skates from a specialty store doesn?t always mean the skater will pay more. In fact, utilizing experts can help save a skater money, and frustration, in the end.

Get the right fit

Choosing the right sized skate is a lot like choosing the right sized shoe. If the shoe fits properly, the foot feels great. If it?s ill fitting, all sorts of problems can arise resulting in extra dollars spent to get the right equipment.

?You?re trying to achieve the equivalent of bolting a blade to your shoe, so it?s important to get the boot to fit tightly,? he said. ?As an adult, you want to get it as tight as you can with it still being comfortable. Comfort is king.?

The correct and comfortable fit begins with the socks. Forget about those super thick wool socks your grandmother knit for you when it comes to going ice skating. Thinner socks made from SmartWool or any fabric that wicks away moisture is optimal. Choose well-fitting socks that don?t bunch or sag and bring them to the fitting.

Hockey skates, he said, should usually be bought a size and a half below the skater?s shoe size.

For young skaters, Gunn recommended purchasing skates an extra size larger to allow for the foot to grow. Gunn?s offers used skates and a trade-in program for re-saleable skates, making skating more affordable for youngsters who want to give it a try.

?The skates don?t have to be from here originally,? he said.

The most important part to getting the fit right, Gunn said, is having the skater present for the fitting. Gunn said he and his staff ask lots of questions while working with the skater to find the perfect skate for them. That?s doubly important for children and youth skaters who are constantly growing, he said.

Upkeep is key

After finding ?the one? at the skate store, storage and upkeep are key to keeping the skates looking (and feeling) like new. To keep equipment in tip-top shape, skaters should:

? Purchase blade guards. Blade guards protect the blades from dulling due to dirt, gravel, or pavement. They also protect hands, fabrics, and pets from being cut. Hard blade guards are ideal for walking short distances.

? Don?t store the skates in the blade guards. Moisture from the environment and ice that is trapped in guards can cause the blades to rust and is costly to fix. Put blade guards on while travelling and if walking over gravel, dirt, or pavement.

? Keep those blades sharp. For recreational skaters, once or twice a year should suffice. For more constant skaters or for skaters who are outside, Gunn recommends sharpening the skates every six to eight hours of ice time.

? Store skates in a dry, cool location. To prevent moisture from infiltrating the skates, Gunn recommended storing skates in a dry, cool location to allow skates to air dry.

For a list of ice arenas in Maine, many of which offer public ice time and rent equipment, visit arenamaps.com/arenas/Maine.htm. Many towns also have outdoor rinks, but if you?re planning to venture out on one of Maine?s many lakes or ponds to try out those blades, make sure the conditions are safe.

Maine Warden Service tips for ice safety

Never guess the thickness of the ice ? Check it! Check the ice in several different places using an auger or some other means to make a test hole and determine the thickness. Make several, beginning at the shore, and continuing as you go out.

Check the ice with a partner, so if something does happen, someone is there to help you. If you are doing it alone, wear a lifejacket.

If ice at the shoreline is cracked or squishy, stay off! Watch out for thin, clear or honeycombed ice. Dark snow and dark ice are other signs of weak spots.

Avoid areas with currents, around bridges and pressure ridges. Wind and currents can break ice.

Parents should alert children of unsafe ice in their area, and make sure that they stay off the ice. If they insist on using their new skates, suggest an indoor skating rink.

If you break through the ice, remember:

Don?t panic.

Don?t try to climb out immediately ? you will probably break the ice again. Reach for solid ice.

Lay both arms on the unbroken ice and kick hard. This will help lift your body onto the ice. Once on the ice, roll, don?t walk, to safety.

To help someone who has fallen through the ice, lie down flat and reach with a branch, plank or rope or form a human chain. Don?t stand. After securing the victim, wiggle backwards to the solid ice.

Mimicking public health strategies could improve cyber security

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Mimicking public health strategies, such as maintaining good "cyber hygiene," could improve cyber security, according to a new paper by a team of economists and public health researchers at RTI International.

The paper, published in the November/December issue of Cross Talk, provides a substantive look at how public health strategies and research methodologies could be used to guide cyber security strategies.

Currently, no centralized approach has been successfully used to coordinate action in improving cyber security. The government has played a relatively limited role, developing standards for industry and, more recently, distributing education materials to schools and civic organizations, but most of the focus has been on business security.

"The public health community has been very successful in identifying, monitoring, and reducing the health impacts of many types of threats," said Brent Rowe, a senior economist at RTI and the paper's lead author. "Given the many similarities between public health and cyber security, the cyber security community would be wise to leverage relevant public health strategies and analysis techniques."

The paper takes a detailed look at public health frameworks that can be used to identify and describe specific cyber security threats and potential solutions.

According to the authors, some of the key lessons from the public health community include:

?Introduce potential solutions to individuals in a way that establishes a measure of trust

?Provide solutions in a convenient and attractive framework (individuals will not engage if participation is difficult, expensive or inconvenient)

?Communicate the nature of threats and interventions to a wide variety of audiences

?Involve multiple organizations (government and nongovernment) in responding to a threat or set of threats

?Consider the unpredictability of individual behavior

"Although the idea of organizing the community of cyber security stakeholders similar to the complexity and scale of public health is daunting, public health research, implementation, and evaluation strategies offer a wealth of well-tested approaches that could be easily leveraged to study cyber security topics, such as how to better understand cyber security risk preferences," said Michael Halpern, Ph.D., a senior public health researcher and an RTI Senior Fellow.

Apple begins selling unlocked iPhone 5 in the US, starting from $649

It's that special time of the year... that is, when Apple decides to unfetter the iPhone for US shoppers. The Cupertino crew has quietly started selling the iPhone 5 in an unlocked, off-contract form that will work on GSM, HSPA+ and (if you're in the right countries) LTE networks. There's few surprises versus what we've seen in years past, or in other regions: the unlocked iPhone 5 ships in the same capacities and colors as the carrier-bound model, and starts from $649. That's still expensive for those still used to buying on an agreement, and it won't represent as much bang-for-the-buck as a $350 Nexus 4. If you're yearning for the LTE the Nexus 4 lacks and don't mind living in an iOS universe, however, Apple is ready and waiting.

Insects beware: The sea anemone is coming

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? As insects evolve to become resistant to insecticides, the need to develop new ways to control pests grows. A team of scientists from Leuven, Belgium have discovered that the sea anemone's venom harbors several toxins that promise to become a new generation of insecticides that are environmentally friendly and avoid resistance by the insects. Since these toxins disable ion channels that mediate pain and inflammation, they could also spur drug development aimed at pain, cardiac disorders, epilepsy and seizure disorders, and immunological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. This finding is described in the December 2012 issue of The FASEB Journal.

"Are toxins friend or foe? The more we understand these toxins, they are more friend, and less foe," said Jan Tytgat, Ph.D., co-author of this study from the Laboratory of Toxicology at the University of Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. "Toxicology shows us how to exploit Mother Nature's biodiversity for better and healthier living."

To make this discovery, Tytgat and colleagues extracted venom from the sea anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima, and purified three main toxins present in the venom. The toxins were characterized in depth, using biochemical and electrophysiological techniques. This provided insight into their structure, functional role and mechanisms of action. The discovery of these toxins may be considered similar to the discovery of a new drug, as they are compounds which could lead to new insecticides and possibly new treatments for human diseases.

"Because these toxins are aimed at important ion channels present not only in insect cells, they form the leading edge of our new biotechnology. Discovery of this useful marine toxin should provide additional incentive to preserve the fragile coral reefs where anemones thrive," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "But, given current attitudes, I suspect there's a better chance of a sea anemone killing a stink bug than for us to reverse our inroads on ocean life."

Students at Layton Junior High get their game on | The Salt Lake ...

(Carol Lindsay | The Salt Lake Tribune) Devin Smith and Miriam Wilson play Ingenious during an after-school board games club at Layton Junior High.

After-school club ? Teacher Stephen Olson loves sharing his passion for board games.

Layton ? Growing up, Stephen Olson loved board games ? all kinds of board games.

He played them with his family and friends. When he went to college at the University of Utah, he started a board game club with fellow students.

Eventually Olson?s friends gave up board games for girlfriends, wives, children and other activities, and the club died out. But Olson?s love for games never diminished.

Fast forward to 2012, and Olson is a math teacher at North Layton Junior High. It?s his first year on the job, and he discovered there is no math club, so he volunteered to supervise one. He then discovers there is no chess club. It?s one of the few board games he doesn?t love, so he asked his administration if he could have a combination chess and board game club.

They consented.

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, the board game club meets after school from three to five. Olsen is a happy teacher?he gets the chance to play board games and share his knowledge and love of the game with students.

Olsen visited his parents? home and retrieved an assortment of his favorite games from youth including Ingenious, Small World and Tsuro. Other students play trading card games and still others play chess.

"I can?t resist playing games," Olson said. "I play while I?m correcting papers."

The games help students with reassigning skills and logic. Small World teaches them about combination and how things can synergize or work against one another. Olson said the students also have to learn to put on their poker faces when playing.

While the majority of game playing is friendly, tension can break out.

story continues below

"Small World gets a little heated," Olson said.

Seventh-grader Alex Chipman loves the structure of board games.

"I have Asperger?s so this is one of the few times I can open up and enjoy myself," said Alex, who flits around the room checking out all the games. "I don?t like it when people don?t follow the rules. Here I don?t have to worry about people going against the rules because if they don?t follow them, the game won?t work."

Alex?s father, David Chipman, is a resource teacher at North Layton Junior High. He enjoys having Alex participate in the club. "It keeps him occupied and forces him to interact socially," he said. "I think it gives the kids a way of expressing their own personality without having to be afraid of what anybody else thinks about it because they all have a shared interest in the games. If you are passive or aggressive in your play it?s OK, it?s a game, and no one gets hurt."

Eighth-grader Miriam Wilson has always loved board games, and she has not missed a single day of club. At home she played Monopoly and Sorry. The club has introduced her to new games.

"I like playing with other people," Miriam said. "After I?ve played with them for a while, I know what they are thinking and what their next move is going to be."

At another table sit the trading-card gamers. Two brothers, Braden and Cameron Putnam, are in the club. They enjoy playing games with each other and their brother, but they joined the game club to play against new people.

Hostess liquidation draws more than 100 bidders

9 hrs.

UPDATED 6:15 PM ET:?Hostess Brands,?the bankrupt maker of Twinkies snack cakes, received court permission to wind down its 82-year-old business on Thursday but revealed "furious" interest in its iconic brands from potential buyers.

New York Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Drain approved the final orders that cleared the way for the company to begin selling its assets, everything from brands such as Ding Dongs and Twinkies to baking equipment and real estate.

"It's undisputed they will be worth more moving down this path," Drain said of the wind-down plan.

Around 110 potential bidders have contacted the company about bidding for at least part of its business, and 70 had enough interest to sign confidentiality agreements, Hostess' banker told the hearing in White Plains, N.Y.

Joshua Scherer of Perella Weinberg, who was hired by Hostess to sell its assets, said that six potential bidders have hired large investment banks to help them.

"It's very significant because it indicates to me that not only are these buyers serious, but they are expecting to spend substantial sums," said Scherer. He said the liquidation could raise $1 billion.

Scherer described the level of incoming calls from potential bidders as "fast and furious." Interested parties include large national retailers and overseas buyers that wanted to bring Hostess brands to India, he said.

By early January, the company expects to have initial bids for its various brands, which will then be put to auction.?

Hostess Brands also?is asking for a judge's approval to give its top executives bonuses totaling up to $1.8 million as part of its wind-down plans.

The company?says the incentive pay is needed to retain the 19 corporate officers and "high-level managers" during the liquidation process, which could take about a year. Two of those executives would be eligible for additional rewards depending on how efficiently they carry out the liquidation. The bonuses would be in addition to their regular pay.

The bonuses do not include pay for CEO Gregory Rayburn, who was brought on as a restructuring expert earlier this year. Rayburn is being paid $125,000 a month.

Hostess is seeking final approval for its wind-down, which was approved on an interim basis last week.

The company's shuttering means loss of about 18,000 jobs.

In court Thursday, an attorney for Hostess noted that the company is no longer able to pay retiree benefits, which come to about $1.1 million a month. Hostess stopped contributing to its union pension plans more than a year ago.

The company's demise came after years of management turmoil, with workers saying the company failed to invest in updating its products. In January, Hostess filed for its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a decade, citing steep costs associated with its unionized work force.

Although Hostess was able to reach a new contract agreement with its largest union, its second biggest union rejected the terms and went on strike Nov. 9. A week later, Hostess announced its plans to liquidate, saying the strike crippled its ability to maintain normal production.?

Information from the Associated Press and Reuters was included in this report.

Roadside blasts kill at least 12 Afghan civilians

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Two roadside bombs exploded on Thursday in eastern and southern Afghanistan, killing at least 12 people and injuring 16 others, officials said.

Militants regularly plant roadside bombs to target Afghan and NATO forces, but the devices often kill civilians. Bombs like the ones in Khost and Uruzgan province have killed a total of 16 people since Tuesday.

A bomb blast killed two civilians at a park in Khost, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of the capital, Kabul, said Jabar Nahimi, governor of Khost province in eastern Afghanistan. Eight others were wounded in the blast, including four women and a child, he said.

Earlier, a minivan traveling in a remote part of Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan struck a roadside bomb, killing at least 10 people and wounding eight others, said Nayamatullah Khaliqi, the top government official in Dehra Wood district. He said most of the dead were women and children.

The United Nations has called on the Taliban leadership to stop using such explosives and mines. The Taliban say they use only remote-controlled roadside bombs which ? unlike the mines automatically activated by pressure plates ? allow a bomber to choose the time of the blast and specifically target coalition troops and their Afghan allies.

The U.N. says that insurgents' homemade bombs continue to cause the most civilian deaths. Such explosives killed 340 civilians and wounded 599 others in the first nine months of this year, an increase of almost 30 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the U.N.

Cellphone Use Is Contagious, Study Finds

Cellphone use is ubiquitous, and new research shows it may be socially contagious, too. People are more likely to pull out their phones to check their text messages or email if they're with someone who has just done the same, the study found.

Researchers at the University of Michigan watched students in dining halls and coffee shops around campus between January and April 2011. They unobtrusively observed pairs of students sitting at tables for as long as 20 minutes and documented their cellphone use at 10-second intervals.

Overall, the students used their cellphones in an average of 24 percent of the intervals, the researchers found. But they were significantly more likely to use their phones (39.5 percent) when their companion had just done so in the previous 10-second interval than without the social cue, the researchers said, adding that this behavior was often repeated.

"Some of this could be people being primed to check their e-mail or phone messages, but this contagious use was happening several times in a 15-minute interaction," study researcher Daniel Kruger said in a statement. [The 10 Most Disruptive Technologies]

Kruger believes this pattern could be related to the effects of social inclusion and exclusion. If one person in a pair engages in an external conversation through their phone, his or her companion may feel excluded. That companion then might be compelled to connect with others externally so as not to feel left out.

The researchers note that they might not observe the same results in a study of different demographics ? for example, in older adults, who may not use cellphones as habitually.

Their findings were detailed in the Human Ethology Bulletin earlier this year.

Best Save Some Money With Some DIY Home Improvements ...

Given all of the information resources at the homeowner?s fingertips today, choosing the best home improvement advice can be tough. Without the right information, your projects can turn into a disaster. The article below can help you get started with a number of home improvement tasks the right way.

Tie or snip extra cord length on your window blinds. It is easy for a child or pet to get caught and strangled in these cords. Make sure you do leave enough cord to maneuver the blinds, but make sure that the cord that does hang down serves no purpose. You may prevent a tragedy by removing the excess cord.

Install a pergola to give your house some character. This garden fixture will add both romance and tranquility to the aesthetics. A pergola can be installed in as little as one weekend when you enlist the help of your friends.

Many people use CFL bulbs, but few know how to deal with them when they break. Bulbs contain mercury, which is poisonous to living beings. Therefore, when one breaks, you should immediately clear out any person or pet so that the room can air out. Then clean up the glass fragments, using duct tape to carefully pick up the smallest pieces. Dispose of the shattered bulb in a double bag, and thoroughly vacuum the entire area, emptying the canister or bag immediately after.

As you plan on making home improvement projects, try to find out how to do certain things by yourself. The pros charge as much as $50 per hour, so tackling those projects on your own can save tons of money. Plus, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.

Improvement Projects

Research ideas for your home improvement projects before you begin. When you stay on the lookout for projects that you think could work in your home, you give yourself many options from which to choose when it comes time to decide on which home improvement projects you want to undertake. Don?t rush into picking color schemes; you don?t want to stress yourself out.

Consider how long you plan on living in the house. If you plan to move in less than five years, it makes no sense to spend a lot of money on huge changes. You should however not overlook maintenance, but any major improvements can be left to a long time owner.

Always carefully review any home improvement contract prior to signing it. As silly as it may seem, you want to make sure everything you are agreeing to is to your approval. If you sign without realizing what the contract contains, you can lose a lot of time and money. Whether you trust him or not, read the details.

Clean with an old toothbrush you no longer use. Whether you?re cleaning the grout in your bath tub area or scrubbing engine parts, you will find that old toothbrushes do an outstanding job. What?s more is that they are free! Why get a new brush when you still have something with a lot of life in it! Save the money for later.

To save money, refinish dreary cabinets in lieu of replacing them. Repaint the cabinet base and replace the doors and fixtures to get an updated new look. It is a more affordable way to improve the look of the kitchen.

In rooms that are most used, installing ceiling fans will help circulate your home?s air. You will not need to turn your air conditioner up as high and you will get warm air moving in the winter. Fans typically can be switched so that they either draw or push air as needed.

Any decent home improvement project will include laying brick and purchasing as many as necessary beforehand would make things flow much quicker. If you should need to repair or add to brickwork, you may have a difficult time trying to match the bricks you already have. Styles of brick change often. If you have extras on hand, you will be well prepared for the future.

With the tips provided in this article, you will be able to obtain legitimate information about home improvement. By incorporating the tips and techniques found in the above article, you will be well on your way to completing any home improvement project.

(AP) ? Doc Rivers wants the Boston Celtics to be tough ? not violent.

The message came too late for Rajon Rondo.

The Celtics point guard was ejected from Wednesday night's game against the Nets when he retaliated for a hard foul against Kevin Garnett by shoving Brooklyn forward Kris Humphries into the courtside seats. Rondo, Humphries and Nets forward Gerald Wallace were ejected, and Brooklyn held on to win 95-83.

"All that stuff, that's not toughness," Rivers told reporters, calling his team soft. "That foul was a hard foul. It was an unnecessary foul. The play was over and then he pushed him down in the air. But I think that's what they think of us: They think they can push you around."

Joe Johnson scored 18 points and Andray Blatche had 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Nets opened up a 21-point, first-half lead and took advantage of the loss of the Celtics' All-Star to win for the ninth time in 11 games.

Garnett had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Paul Pierce added 14 points for Boston. Rondo had three assists before he was kicked out, ending his streak at 37 games with double-digits ? tied for second-longest in NBA history.

The Nets led by eight after one quarter and scored 19 of the first 25 points in the second to make it 47-26. Boston cut the deficit to 14 points and trailed by 16 when Garnett took an off-balance jumper from the right baseline and Humphries leveraged him to the floor with his left arm.

Rondo trailed the play with a two-handed shove that sent Humphries into the courtside seats.

"Kevin could have gotten hurt. He's in the air. He took a bad fall. And so Rondo saw that and probably reacted, and over-reacted, obviously," Rivers said. "I can't get in anybody's head. But at that point we're getting our tails kicked and we're probably frustrated."

Wallace soon entered the fray by shoving Garnett. Nets point guard Deron Williams said Humphries, who did not speak to reporters after the game, had scratches on his head and neck.

After the game, Humphries posted a picture of his scratched left shoulder with the comment: "Anyone know where I can quick get a Tetnis shot in Boston?"

While the rest of the players remained by their benches, coaches and officials tried to break up the skirmish.

"I think guys just try to defend themselves," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "I think the league should really take that into account. Because I don't know if guys can just walk away all the time. They've got to kind of protect themselves."

The referees went to the scorer's table to watch the incident on replay, and their verdict was announced over the public address system: Two technical fouls for Humphries, one for Wallace ? his second of the game, ending his night ? and one for Garnett.

Rondo was simply ejected.

"Rondo initiated everything that proceeded after the foul," crew chief James Capers said in a pool report provided to reporters. "And when he and Humphries go into the stands, they are involved in a fight. Fighting is an automatic ejection."

Rondo left the Celtics locker room before it was opened to reporters, and was unavailable for comment.

"We all back each other," Garnett said. "We take a lot of pride in putting on this jersey. I know I do. This ain't the Girl Scouts or the Boy Scouts. That's what it is. It's the NBA. You've got to get used to it."

When the free throws were done, Boston trailed 51-38, and the Celtics never got closer than nine points after that.

Rondo has had a history of petulance, including a one-game suspension during the opening round of last year's playoff series against Atlanta after he chest-bumped referee Marc Davis while complaining about a call in the final minute of a Boston loss.

During the 2011-12 regular season, he was suspended for two games for throwing a ball at an official.

"Usually he goes after the refs," Rivers said. "This was another guy, so this was better."

He has also come under criticism for selfishness this season for re-entering a 20-point loss to Detroit in the fourth quarter to keep his streak alive.

Notes: Rondo's streak of 10 or more assists dated to March 11 of last season. That ties John Stockton for second-longest in NBA history. Magic Johnson holds the record at 46 consecutive games in the 1983-84 season. ... U.S. Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman was in attendance. ... Rivers said Johnson is one of his best friends. The two had dinner together on Tuesday night. ... Garnett tied John Havlicek for 18th on the NBA career list with 1,270 games played. ... Pierce passed Bob Pettit for 13th on the NBA's all-time list for free throws made with 6,183. ... Celtics F Jeff Green sprained his right knee in the second half but was able to return. Boston F Chris Wilcox left the game due to illness. ... The teams next meet on Christmas Day in Brooklyn. ... The Nets were playing their third game in four days.

S.Africa's rand holds on to surprise gains

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - S.Africa's rand held firm against the dollar Wednesday, consolidating a surprisingly strong performance in the previous session after weaker-than-expected economic growth figures.

The rand was little changed at 0611 GMT, trading at 8.8434 against the greenback after New York's close of 8.845.

"The international backdrop remains negative this morning but the trend for rand gains remains strong," Rand Merchant Bank said in a note.

Investors are likely to pay attention to a speech by Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus at a conference of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) at 0800 GMT.

Marcus left the repo rate unchanged at a four-decade low of 5.0 percent last week and warned that strikes in the mining sector and beyond since August would lead to job losses in a country already grappling with unemployment of over 25 percent.

Tuesday's GDP statistics drove home that point, showing that growth slowed sharply in the third quarter after a big contraction in the strike-hit mining sector.

Government bond yields slipped one basis point each to 5.46 percent for the three year bond and 7.555 percent for the longer dated 14-year paper.

Power utility Eskom is due to auction 400 million rand between the EL29 and ES33 bonds at 0900 GMT.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? The owner of a Bangladesh clothing factory where a fire killed 112 people says he was never informed the facility was required to have an emergency exit, a sign of how far removed the leaders of the nation's garment industry are from issues of worker safety.

"It was my fault. But nobody told me that there was no emergency exit, which could be made accessible from outside," factory owner Delwar Hossain was quoted Thursday as telling The Daily Star newspaper. "Nobody even advised me to install one like that, apart from the existing ones."

"I could have done it. But nobody ever suggested that I do it," said Hossain, who could not be reached for comment by The Associated Press on Thursday.

Activists in the South Asian country hope the tragedy will invigorate their lengthy ? but so far fruitless ? efforts to upgrade safety standards and force stronger government oversight of the powerful industry.

The Tazreen Fashions Ltd. factory in a Dhaka suburb was making clothes for Wal-Mart, Sears, Disney and other major global retailers. When a fire broke out over the weekend, many of the 1,400 workers were trapped inside the eight-story building because exit doors were locked. A fire official said the death toll would have been much lower if the factory had had an emergency exit.

Police said they were interrogating three factory managers on possible negligence charges. Workers said as they tried to escape the fire they found exit doors were locked.

An AP reporter who visited the damaged factory Wednesday found three stairways but no special fire exits.

Hossain, a former accounts manager at another garment factory, set up his own clothing business, Tuba Textiles Mills Ltd. in 2004. The Tazreen factory was one of a dozen owned by his company.

Workers interviewed by the AP have expressed support for Hossain, and describe him as a bearded man in his 50s who usually wears white clothes. Worker Mohammad Rajib said he is a "gentle man" who gave them raises and fired some managers after workers protested against low pay and abuse.

"He did not sack any worker. He told us: 'You are my people, if you survive, I will survive,'" Rajib said.

The factory employed about 1,400 workers, most from a poor region of northern Bangladesh and about 70 percent of them women.

Labor Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said that factories without emergency exits ? or with only one such exit ? will be forced to close until they upgrade their safety infrastructure. It was not clear when and how that directive will be enforced.

Nazma Akhter, president of the Bangladesh Combined Garment Workers Federation trade union, called for the arrest of the factory's owners and management to send a message to the industry as a whole.

"There should be a criminal case against them. It could stop the recurrence of such incidents," he said.

In 2001, Bangladesh's High Court directed the government to set up a committee to oversee the safety of garment workers after a similar fire in a factory killed 24 people. But that directive was never implemented, and more than 300 people have been killed in garment factory fires since 2006.

"It's unfortunate that the government has ignored the directive. Had the government complied with it there would have been fewer accidents, I believe," said Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain O Salish Kendra, a legal and human rights group that had petitioned the court for the ruling.

Government officials did not respond to calls for comment.

An Associated Press reporter at the factory discovered children's shorts with Wal-Mart's Faded Glory label, hooded sweat shirts emblazoned with Disney cartoons, shorts with hip-hop star Sean Combs' ENYCE tag, and sweaters from the French company Teddy Smith and the Scottish company Edinburgh Woollen Mill. Sears was among the companies listed in the account books.

Wal-Mart said it received a safety audit that showed the factory was "high-risk" and had decided well before the blaze to stop doing business with Tazreen. But it said a supplier had continued to use Tazreen without authorization. The retailer said it stopped doing business with the supplier Monday.

Sears said it learned after the blaze that its merchandise was being produced there without its approval through a vendor that has since been fired. Walt Disney Co., which licenses its characters to clothing makers, said its records indicate that none of its licensees have been permitted to make Disney-brand products at the factory for at least a year.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association fears the repercussions if Western companies pull out of the country's $20 billion a year garment business. Wal-Mart alone buys about $1 billion of garments here.

"It's the time of solidarity, not to go away. Wal-Mart should come forward to resolve existing issues through discussion and an attitude of partnership," said Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, president of the trade group. "Otherwise, what will happen? Manufacturers would lose orders, workers will lose their jobs. This could create another complicated situation. For whose interest? None will benefit from it."

Details of Destiny leaked online; Bungie confirms rumours - Video ...

Quite a few details of Bungie?s next game, Destiny, have leaked online and developer has confirmed that the leaks are true.

The leak comes from IGN and reveals details about the story and the concept art of the new game. The document that was leaked to IGN was prepared by an advertising agency and speaks about the plot and other key aspects of Destiny.

The document reads, ?Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man?s Golden Age. A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it?s here for, but only that it?s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ?knights? tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and ? eventually ? overcoming it.? Elsewhere in the document, the massive alien ship is referred to as ?the Traveler.?

Bungie co-founder Jason Jones says, ?Destiny is designed for your inner seven year old. We want to make it feel like a mythic adventure.?

From the above statement, it looks like the game will be quite different from what we have come to know from the Halo developer. Yes, for those of you that didn't know, Bungie was the developer responsible for the Halo franchise before passing on the baton to 343 Industries that made the epic Halo 4 game.

Bungie has accepted that the leaks are true and on its official website says, ?Go ahead. Take a peek. It?s alright. We?weren't?quite ready, but we will be soon, and we can?t wait to finally show you what?we've?really been up to? Stick around, we haven?t even started yet.??

No concrete release date for the game is known but reports on the Internet suggest that the first game in the series will launch first on the Xbox 360 and the rest of the games in the Destiny franchise will launch for the subsequent console launched by Microsoft, which is expected to be the Xbox 360. The PS3 and PC versions of the game will launch subsequently after the Xbox 360 version of the game. ?

Plumbing Supplies | Home Improvement Ideas

Anyone in the plumbing business knows the importance of having plumbing supplies close at hand. As a plumber, or a homeowner who is good at doing repairs, you need to be prepared for any plumbing task that may come your way. If you are a plumber, the list of supplies that you need will be vast, and although you may not have them in your stock, you need to have a place where you can get these supplies quickly. Here are some of the factors that you should bear in mind when looking for a place to get these supplies regularly.

The store that you choose should have an extensive supply of plumbing tools and accessories. These may vary from pipes, joints, fittings, taps, valves, and plumbing tools. You can always rely on a well stocked store to provide you with anything that you may need, at short notice. Even if you are a homeowner faced with a minor repair job, you need to get the supplies in the shortest time possible.

Given the state of the economy today, it is important that you look for a store that will give you plumbing supplies at a good price. Repair jobs can be costly, and homeowners are always looking for the lowest priced plumber to hire. You need to be competitive by providing your services at the lowest cost possible. The only way you can do this, is by looking for discounted supplies, which will allow you to give competitive quotes to prospective clients.

The quality of the plumbing supplies is an important factor, in selecting a supplier for your plumbing needs. You need supplies that will not wear out quickly. You need to minimize the cost of repairing homes, by ensuring that there are no repeat jobs, brought about by the use of sub-standard supplies. You can review the best brands available, and find out which store has got them in stock.

You should start your search for such a store on the Internet. Go through their inventory list, and find one that will provide you with the largest stock of supplies, at the lowest cost. You should also read online reviews and see which stores have the highest rating for efficiency, inventory, and delivery times. Visit your local plumbing shop, and see what supplies are stoked there. If certain items are not in stock, then you can order these from an online store, which will deliver to your place of business.
